Cold Steel Mini AK-47 Knife

I've never been so impressed by a knife with a blade length of around 3". The knife was so sharp out of the box that I could easily shave hair off my arm. I now have a bald spot on my arm, but well worth it! Next, it's virtually impossible for this knife to slip out of your hand because the handles just "grab" your palm and hold your hand in place, even if it's sweaty. The bottom of the handle contours to the shape of a closed fist so well that "death grip" is the best analogy I can find to describe how well it stays in hand. I've duplicated all of the stress tests for this knife that can be found on Youtube and it passed with flying colors (even the spine whacking test). The locking mechanism on the AK makes for absolutely zero blade play in any direction. Lock this knife, and it feels like a fixed blade. The wave feature works perfectly, but the attachment on op of the blade is removable, if you so choose. One handed deployment is easy, but the lock is SO strong, that closing it one handed is quite difficult, although NOT impossible. It just takes practice. The clip is rock solid and unobtrusive to the overall grip. The AK even comes with a second handle, just for us lefties! There is also a light weight, blunt protrusion opposite the knife's business end that could be used as a blunt instrument in a self defense capacity, along with a generous size lanyard hole. Best of all, the blade length makes it perfectly legal in MOST places. The only cautionary comment I have is that people with large hands might want to consider the full size AK47 instead of the mini. For folks like me, with small hands, it offers the perfect fit. Finally, given the price point, what you end up with is an extremely durable knife that you can use and abuse with total confidence.

UPDATE 31 March 2011 : Just got the nerve to do the test where you balance the knife between 2 bricks and then stand on it. Since it's the mini AK47, I had to balance my entire body weight (185 Lbs.) on just one foot, which put even more pressure on the knife! I have to say that it passed with flying colors and works as well as ever! No issues with opening or closing, and nothing seems to be bent at all. I was so impressed, I got one for my son. I have to give it to Cold steel. Their product torture tests are apparently genuine.

It was a little pricey, but given the AUS8 blade material and the G10 coated handles I thought I'd see what the AK was about. WOW! This knife is super high quality. The blade action is the smoothest I've used as it effortlessly glides open and locks sturdily in place with no mechanical advantage or spring assist. If the full size version of the AK wasn't illegal in my state (blade length), I'd order it in a heartbeat. The cost of the mini was roughly twice what I usually spend on an EDC, but man-o-man, so worth it. The grip is super grippy despite not having a rubber handle and the lightweight materials do not sacrifice quality in the least. It feels like a well engineered piece of equipment. My 17yo son is begging me to give it to him. Sorry kid. Another reason get a job (LOL). Buy once, cry once, use it forever. Peace.

After much research I chose this knife as my first EDC. So far it has been just about everything I expected, and I really like it. For its small size it is impressive, lightweight and sharp. The handle wears perfectly and the finish on the metal wears ok. I love how with the specially shaped thumb shelf I can "wave" the knife off my pants upon drawing it, deploying the great blade faster than a spring assisted or automatic knife. I have had it for 4 months and there is no rust or discoloration on the metal despite extensive wear in the Florida climate. The g10 handles seem extremely durable and have sandpaper like texture. I think it will last forever. I love how in its simplicity, it matches speed with automatics and excels in lock strength and stiffness.

I had to dock a star because after not to long I had to tighten the main pivot screw, and the thumb notch became ever so loose. Also it developed a rattling when shaken side to side which I can't trace but which seems to have no effect what so ever on function or tightness. I'm sure it could be fixed upon disassembly, but I would rather not mess with something that ain't broken.

UPDATE: After maybe 10 months the lock wasn't working right. As per the warranty I sent it back to Cold Steel and in less than 3 weeks I had a brand new one on my doorstep.

Wonderfully constructed and high quality, the mini-ak47 is a light and versatile knife which includes many useful features. These include the:

-Aluminum pommel: Great for glass shattering in emergency situations or for non-lethal striking.
-Wave: This opening feature works very well with almost any pants or shorts you might wear.
-Triad locking mechanism: Durable and trustworthy, you never have to worry about wearing down the locking mechanism. See the demo videos on youtube.
-Lightweight: Its so light you barely notice that you're carrying it.
-G10 Handle: The handle is very grippy, ergonomic, and sturdy.

The only drawback is the teflon coating comes off easily (just from cutting through cardboard). Also the tip is a bit fragile, but it's to be expected for its design. The other features more than make up for this drawback. I chose this over other cold steel knives with the triad lock (recon 1, lawman) becuase of its great features.

This Cold Steel Mini AK-47 knife, is being bought as a gift. The first one I bought has been just as described. Sharp, opens in a blink, fits in the hand in a way that makes me confident the knife is secure. The new one was bought as a surprise for my son, it arrived next day as requested. Great knife, good price, on time. Nice!

I have always owned Cold Steel, I have always loved there knifes. I have the larger AK-47 and have been carry it everyday for the past 5 years. So I got the small one for my boyfriend and he loves it. If you want a small knife to carry everyday that is a knife that won't let you down the AK-47 is for you!

Tight pocket clip that will eat away your pockets with sandpaper texture g10

Suggestions: remove the pocket clip with torx screw and sand down the g10 into a finer texture.

Living in California, especially in Ventura County presents quite a hassle when deciding to pick a knife for daily carry use. The cops here a real jerks at times and seem to automatically assume you use a knife only to rob and kill, silly them I use a handgun for that.... just kidding. But on a serious note if you like your knife and your don't like catching a stupid weapon charge that will most likely land you on some form of probation then its wise to carry a knife that falls under the category of not being illegal.

In general that means a blade under 3.5 inches and most importantly is not spring assisted or in any means able to be "whipped" out very fast as this will generally get you in trouble.

This knife falls under both categories but in no way sacrifices functional abilities. This thing is built like a stone, super durable and talk about sharp? This thing could replace a light saber.

The only downside is that whoever designed the clip did not consider that this thing sucks and will shred your pants. Easy fix though, I took a screw driver and "created" some extra room by pushing the clip up and making some breathing room.

The handle is rough but IMO I like the handle as it provides a good grip and feels solid in my hand.

The knife does have a intimidating look with the black thick blade.

Overall excellent knife and for the price it is a deal. The only knife I have that can match this knife in terms of function and look is a bench made that costs about 2.5 times the amount I paid for this.

Super Sharp!!! The wave design takes very little practice to perfect with this knife. Makes for a great EDC! I liked it so much that I bought one for each of my boys. They love 'em too! ;)
