Product Description

Under-The Hill was the notoriously rowdy riverfront district of Natchez, Mississippi at the beginning of the nineteenth century. So disreputable, it was seldom mentioned in the polite drawing rooms of the antebellum mansions that dotted the other side of town during the era when cotton was king. Our Natchez Bowie was born "Under-The-Hill" and takes its pedigree from those seedy taverns and dimly lit streets. Line-bred for battle, it's the definitive fighting Bowie. Its long blade is perfectly shaped for strength, reach and leverage, and its significant heft is flawlessly balanced, giving it unparalleled liveliness and velocity. Combine all that with its wickedly razor sharp edge and you have a knife that pierces like a dagger, cuts like a razor and chops like a cleaver!

I previously reviewed the Cold Steel Natchez In San Mai III. That is a great knife but many can't justify spending $385 to $585 on a production Bowie. Well the Cold Steel Natchez Bowie in SK5 is now available from about $165 to $235. The swedge is factory sharpened and is sharper than the original Natchez San Mai III or Laredo. Yes, this is a big knife. It is not as fast as the smaller Laredo but has more weight and power.

The new version comes with Secure-Ex Sheath which will not hold moisture like leather. The leather has it's good points for concealment but the Secure-Ex won't scratch your blade and is a perfect fit. If you want to buy a high quality, big bowie and not have second thoughts about the $500 range of the original, buy this one. You won't be disappointed.

I have always loved the classic Bowie knife. I think it is the quintessential American blade which is unique to our heritage, as the Samurai sword is to the Japanese or Balisong to the Filipinos. However, a good quality Bowie not made from cheap spring steel would almost always cost north of the $500 mark and some are 4 figures. Even Cold Steel's own San Mai version of this knife is prohibitively expensive at $400+ depending on where you find it.

I went to Cold Steel's parking lot sale and got this beautiful SK5 version with the concealex (Kydex) sheath for $162. Can't beat the price and I got to take it home with me immediately without the shipping wait. I immediately got to hacking stuff up at home, of course, and while this blade does not have the same super razor hair shaving blade as some of the other knives from Cold Steel, it is plenty sharp and the tip is wicked. I had no problem using it to hack through thick catalogues.

Keeping it oiled is a new thing though because I never knew you had to do that but I guess it is a necessity with swords and so being a short handsword, this blade has to be lightly oiled as well. Overall an excellent product for the price.

This is an excellent, outdoor, all purpose blade for the price. The sheath allows for multiple ambidexterous carry positions. The primary edge is a cleaver; while the "false" edge, has utility edge, is great for tough targets, saving your primary edge. Despite some negative reviews concerning the material of the handle and gaurd, it's a great setup and a very minor comprimise for the price. Stainless steel would be a better choice, but negligible at most. I also own a Cold Steel Kukri (Falcata) with the "black" epoxy coating. Another great knife, but I favor the Natchez Bowie in the ease of reflexive drawing and resheathing it. The Kukri is fast but takes a little more practice and orentation. Anyway, this style of knife is highly recommended in "Everybody's Knife Bible", a great knife purpose book, by Don Paul.
