5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap self-defense weapon
I wanted an inexpensive Kubotan stick to carry for self-defense, and the price was way better than the Benchmade tactical pens. Although the pen works well, it does not appear that one can get refills. Has a screw-on cap so it won't come off on impact. 3.0 out of 5 stars Perfect except for writing
I want to give this item a higher rating because it is a great idea, well-made, and has some definite coolness factor. It's downfall, at least with the couple I've encountered, is that it really doesn't write very well, and doesn't even compare (in my estimation) to an actual sharpie.

I wanted an inexpensive Kubotan stick to carry for self-defense, and the price was way better than the Benchmade tactical pens. Although the pen works well, it does not appear that one can get refills. Has a screw-on cap so it won't come off on impact. On first look, it appeared quite large but actually fit in my hand quite nicely and has a "rough" exterior to aid in gripping and a clip for carrying so its always handy. Since its made of glass-reinforced plastic (used for impact devices such as night sticks) and is in no way "sharp," I assume its okay to carry on an airplane, but don't know if it would be considered a Kubotan, which would have to checked rather than carried on. Will update if/when I use it for self-defense!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy and discreet, January 6, 2009

Great product, very sturdy, you know you can use it without destroying the shaft, it is made for impact. Plus, it is not obvious as a weapon, wear it to the mall, to school, only if you think it's necessary of course.

Not bad for the price. Don't buy it as a writing tool. This is a great 'pen' to carry, when you work in a rough office, if you get my drift.

Yes, I realize that this is intended to be a self-defense item disguised as a pen, but if you're going to bother being a pen, do it right. If you just want something for defense, get a stick specifically designed for that purpose. The trouble with trying to be convient - being a pen but not a very good one - is that you're probably going to start leaving it at home or w/e because it doesn't replace the marker it looks like.

I love the idea of the Sharkie, but really wish it was a better marker. Fatter tip, like sharpies of the same size, and, even more importantly, ink that flows and marks comparably to purpose-built writing utensils.

Would be a perfect item.

Except...
Except i didn't notice the size. It's not the same size as a sharpie marker. It's like a clown size marker! Bigger than a normal magic marker, won't even fit in a pocket right and forget wearing it in a shirt pocket. Worse... when you open it there's a tiny tiny little marker tip, like ity-bity little fine point pen tip.
Any coolness points for the giant marker lost by the jokes from the ladies about over-compensating.

Love the idea. Great in every way except that one.
But to me the whole idea was to have something indistinguishable from a normal Sharpie. This was way off the mark.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sharked,, September 7, 2010
This review is from: Sharkie (Misc.)
I read the reviews and realize this is a basic tool, but I will tell you I bought the real Sharpie in Stainless. It's not their largest marker, but a very nice writer. It is also solid enough to jam up a nose, into a neck or temple incapacitating an attacker. A hard poke in the ribs, thigh, or back of the hand of someone grabbing from behind would cause anyone to let go & will causing serious bruises.

First off, this is not practical to use as pen, but works in a pinch. The cap has to be screwed off, so if you want a good marker buy a sharpie. But, if you need something for discreet self defense, I think this is great. It is made of hard plastic, so it isn't going to set off metal detectors. It is hard enough so that it is going to hurt someone if you know how to use. I have no interest in carry a gun or a knife, but I do like having this with me in certain situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars ...Wow!, March 27, 2011

Love this marker! It is great for self defense and for even writing in school. And, if you are ever questioned on what it is, it can easily be shown as a normal marker... with a punch!
Pros:
Heavy-Grade material
Cool Graphic
Very Durable
Limited Warranty
Cons:
The top cap needs to be unscrewed each time to use the marker
The pen itself isn't too great, but great overall.
This thing is great for all types of applications and will last. Virtually indestructible!

Bigger than anticipated, but airport security does not seem to notice. Could do with more grip.
Fortunately have not been forced to use it. Yet.
