4.0 out of 5 stars A good deal, very reliable
I purchased this Tomahawk to carry with me on camping trips. It is light and easy to carry, doesn't get in the way. And it has proven to be quite durable. It was really handy at splitting larger blocks of wood into smaller pieces for kindling and even sharp enough to be useful for shaving bark, also to use as kindling. Overall, a great value for the money and a solid...

2.0 out of 5 stars looks cool but...
I got this axe about 3 months ago. After about 2 weeks of throwing and chopping work the head started to come off. The metal is fine but the connection with the shaft needs much improvement before I would by another.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cold Steel Vietnam tomahawk, March 18, 2009
This review is from: Cold Steel Vietnam Tomahawk American Hickory Handle (Leather Sheath) (Sports)
A good starter hawk if you can find it for under $35. While it is better steel and wood than most low-end tomahawks, It is not in the same league as The American Tomahawk Company's VTAC($110-$120), And certainly will not hold up to the abuse one of the RMJ Tactical products. (Upwards of $300)

For what it is, it does well. I own two of these models. The first one came decently sharp, but the glue on top of the handle that holds the head on was chipped and some substance like hot glue was used to replace the crack. After ten to fifteen throws, It was sliding all over. I still use it, because it is secured pretty well, but I don't throw it anymore.

My second one, the main blade came duller than dull. The spike however, was extremely sharp. A few minutes with a file and then with a sharpening stone, it had a really good edge. The handle right under the head is carved differently than my first one, swelling right under the head. This gives me hope that it will not slide. It hasn't yet anyway.

These are good practicing and training 'hawks, as well as good for light to medium use but if you are going to need it to save your life in a survival situation as a tool or as a weapon, drop a few extra dollars on something better made. c s

Hey this is exactly like the Vietnam tomahawk, which is to say it is a POS. Get a Cold Steel Trench Hawk instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Cold Steel quality, December 29, 2010

When I opened the package the sheath on the Tomahawk said American Tomahawk, not Cold Steel. I thought this was odd. The Tomahawk felt good in my hand but I immediately noticed that the bottom of the "hickory" handle had not been sanded. I put my DeWalt orbital sander on the bottom of the "hickory" handle and within 10 seconds it was smooth. Why hadn't Cold Steel done this? Because they don't make it.
Took Tomahawk out to throwing range. On the first two throws the tomahawk only sank into a soft pine target a half an inch. On the third and final throw the Tomahawk handle shattered inside the Tomahawk head. The handle flew straight up in the air about 20 feet while the head fell to the ground.
Must be Chinese "Hickory".
I love Cold Steel products! Do not be fooled. This Tomahawk is garbage. It looks great, it isn't.

this is a great tomahawk. For all-around tools it is small comes with a good case it is solid and made quick work of wood and other materials.

Had this Tomahawk for 10 minutes before the handle broke off. Went to hardware store bought a second one got home 10 minutes later that handle broke off. Now what????? Tomahawk head is nice, sharp, sticks well. Would be very useful if I could get a handle to work.

Excellent! does all that it is advertised to do. Very handy. I plan to get one for my brother who is retired and lives on a sail boat. He keeps a shotgun for self defense on board and I think this would be a great addition and of great general use on board.
