Review

"An excellent book about canoeing in the wilderness of the Canadian Barrens...a well told story." -- Verlen Kruger, canoeist, September, 1985

About the Author

Clayton Klein lives on a farm near Fowlerville, Michigan, in the house where he was born in 1919. He is a part of the Fowlerville business community, having founded the Klein Fertilzer Company in 1951. He served as its general manager and president for thirty years.

He is a member of the American Canoe Association, the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association, the Audubon Society, as well as several other groups and organizations.

An avid hiker, he has walked more than a thousand miles per year for the past fifteen years, and more than twelve hundred miles each year since 1976. He is an active outdoorsman who enjoys canoeing, exploration and writing.

Darrell Klein, the author’s son, is also an active outdoorsman who canoes, golfs, hunts with bow and arrow, and spends a lot of time with his family. He is now the president and general manager of the family fertilizer business with its four locations in Michigan’s lower peninsula.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cold Summer Wind/Klein, July 27, 2008
This review is from: Cold Summer Wind (Hardcover)
First person narrative of four canoe trips through the Barren Lands of Canada over a period of years by Clayton Klein and his son. Obviously written by an amateur, this in itself imparts a degree of "right there" reality. The Kleins don't come off as intrepid explorers, but neither do they appear as bumbling dolts; they are a pair of experienced canoists traveling across one of the most desolate places on earth (and I know, I've been there myself). They see things the way normal people would, and their descriptions are much the same, with natural curiosity and wonder. The only fault I would take is that their quoted dialogues don't ring quite true; they sound as though they were scripted or at least proof read for publication. Anyone who has done a canoe trip will appreciate what they saw and did, and anyone who hasn't will know what it's like. There is also a Cold Summer Wind II.
