4.0 out of 5 stars Cold Summer Wind/Klein, July 27, 2008
This review is from: Cold Summer Wind (Hardcover)
First person narrative of four canoe trips through the Barren Lands of Canada over a period of years by Clayton Klein and his son. Obviously written by an amateur, this in itself imparts a degree of "right there" reality. The Kleins don't come off as intrepid explorers, but neither do they appear as bumbling dolts; they are a pair of experienced canoists traveling across one of the most desolate places on earth (and I know, I've been there myself). They see things the way normal people would, and their descriptions are much the same, with natural curiosity and wonder. The only fault I would take is that their quoted dialogues don't ring quite true; they sound as though they were scripted or at least proof read for publication. Anyone who has done a canoe trip will appreciate what they saw and did, and anyone who hasn't will know what it's like. There is also a Cold Summer Wind II.
