Book Description

April 1, 2009

Marilee James has a complicated life--caring for her special-needs son, playing surrogate mother to an abandoned niece and temporarily running the local paper until the new managing editor arrives. She's so busy attending to everyone else that her own yearnings get pushed aside.

Then Tate Holloway comes speeding into town in his bmw, bringing his whiz-bang laptop, journalistic integrity and the thrill of remembering what running a small-town newspaper is all about. Tate's a firm believer in the little things that make life worthwhile: overripe peaches, a good dog, a passionate kiss. The kinds of things he thinks Marilee needs to rediscover--with him.

Problem is, she's already engaged. Not about to let a little thing like a fianc? stand in his way, Tate sets out to win Marilee's heart, little by little, starting with cold tea on a hot day.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In her latest inspirational charmer (following Driving Lessons), Matlock revisits the gentle town of Valentine, Okla. Everything's pretty much the same in the tiny berg, except the local newspaper. Muriel Porter, publisher of the Valentine Voice, has run off to tour the world with her new husband, and she has left the newspaper in the capable hands of her cousin, Tate Holloway, a big-city editor who intends to stir things up with his controversial editorials. When Tate arrives at his new home, he's shocked to find a small boy, a dog and a big orange cat asleep on his porch swing, but he soon learns that the boy is Willie Lee James, the learning-disabled son of his neighbor and star reporter, Marilee James. If Marilee weren't "almost engaged" to Parker Lindsey, the town vet, Tate would take measures to get to know the beautiful reporter better. Marilee has more than her share of burdens, however, and single moms will relate as she struggles to raise her son and 11-year-old niece and tries to decide whether to take the easy way out by marrying Parker. But just when she reaches a decision, Tate arrives with a frosty pitcher of iced tea and a winning smile. This is a delicious read for a lazy summer day. It's not overly sweet, and it has enough zing to satisfy readers thirsting for an uplifting, relaxing read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read all the Nicholas Sparks books?, May 17, 2006
I was heartbroken when I finished the last Nicholas Sparks book. I wanted to read more or something similar, so after wondering through the pages of Amazon I came across Curtiss Ann Matlock's Cold Tea on a Hot Day. It was just what I was looking for! After reading the book, I fell in love with the author and have continued reading her works. If you want a good easily-read romance, this is the one! It was so good that I read it for six hours the first day I received it! If you are a romance novel junkie like myself, read COLD TEA ON A HOT DAY!

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, December 14, 2005
Marilee James is a single mother of a special needs son and also the caretaker for her sisters daughter. She works at the local paper but has no real direction in her life. She has spent years dating the local veterinarian and is having trouble making that final commitment to get married to him. There is something that keeps holding her back and until Tate Holloway, the new editor of the paper comes to town she is not sure what her reasons may be.
In a simple book about romance, friendship, and family Curtiss Ann Matlock takes us to Valentine, Oklahoma and brings us a story you wont soon forget. If you are a fan of southern fiction or are looking for a good clean read, then Cold Tea On A Hot Day is just what you need. Also, there is a follow up book At The Corner of Love and Heartache.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, full of earthy wisdom, September 17, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is the perfect, relaxing read for a hot Indian Summer day. I loved the simple, uncomplicated characters and the down home plot which revolved around Marilee, her mentally challenged son and niece with just the right amount of romance thrown in for good measure. If you're looking for a well-written 'feel good' book, then this is the one for you. I was eager to read the sequel when I got to the happy ending.....
