I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review. Attorney Lou Mason is caught in a tangle of deception as he attempts to defend a troubled young woman (Jordan Hackett) accused of double murder. Multiple suspects are found and none fit just right except Jordan. I agree with what another reviewer said about this book, "I had a hard time keeping...

4.0 out of 5 stars solid legal thriller, February 1, 2004
This review is from: Cold Truth (Mass Market Paperback)
In Kansas City, TV news reporters catch nationally syndicated popular psychiatrist Dr. Gina Davenport falling from her eighth floor office to her death. Her local radio station manager Arthur Hackett and his wife Carol hire lawyer Lou Mason to defend their troubled twenty-one year old daughter Jordan, who confesses that she pushed the doctor out the window.

Lou has doubts as some discrepancies exist in Jordan's account of the event and her actions leading to the murder. Instead he wonders whether former felon, the Svengali-like Centurion Johnson, head of Sanctuary, a place for troubled youth that includes Jordan who is living there, is influencing his client. If the answer is yes as he suspects he wonders how to prove this is so when Jordan seems uninterested in helping her own defense.

Though Lou's latest falling in love is fun, Abby Lieberman' "side confession" is a distracter from a solid legal thriller that never slows down until the final attempt on the hero's life. Lou is a delightful protagonist who tries to do the right thing by his client, but as usual ends up in deep trouble just trying to survive. The support cast, both those recurring and those unique to this plot, provide depth to either the investigation or Lou. Joel Goldman provides another fine tale.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review. Attorney Lou Mason is caught in a tangle of deception as he attempts to defend a troubled young woman (Jordan Hackett) accused of double murder. Multiple suspects are found and none fit just right except Jordan. I agree with what another reviewer said about this book, "I had a hard time keeping all the characters straight as Goldman introduced them at a rapid-fire pace, resulting in many character sketches but few fully realized personalities." The main story was interesting enough but the ending was a surprise. Not usually my type of book, but worth the read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping thriller that keeps you guessing till the end, October 28, 2011

A well thought out solid thriller that had me gripped till the end. The writing was good the dialogues were realistic, although Lou Mason seemed to have a large amount of friends that are built like brick walls and the body count was extremly high at the end of it all.The only thing I thought did the story a little injustice was the Mason meets Abby instant love storyline. That was cheesy and not on par with the rest of the book, as if had to be fitted in there like a missing four cornered jigsaw piece being sqeezed into a three cornered hole. Aside from that I thought it was a great read and look forward to reading more by this writer. I received a free copy of this book for my review.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting mystery, September 5, 2011
(Note: I received a free Kindle copy of this book in exchange for my review.)

In Cold Truth, attorney Lou Mason is caught in a tangle of deceit and multiple suspects as he attempts to defend a troubled girl accused of double murder.

I had a hard time keeping all the characters straight as Goldman introduced them at a rapid-fire pace, resulting in many character sketches but few fully realized personalities. The mystery itself was interesting enough, and I didn't suspect the ending.

Overall, I didn't much care about any of the characters, and a romance kindled between Lou and another character seemed abrupt and not very believable - more of a plot device than a real interest between the characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner, April 17, 2004
By A Customer

If you haven't read any of Joel Goldman's Lou Mason books, you're really missing out. The Last Witness was nominated for the Edgar Award, and now we are treated with Cold Truth. I won't bother with a synopsis. You can get that elsewhere. Just know that Goldman keeps to form, providing an entertaining read with that great lawyer Lou Mason. Mason makes the stories special. Don't miss this one, or any of the others. Well worth your time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid read, January 2, 2012
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review.

I found this book a solid read, if not a little too slow at times.

The story line was good but just couldn't grab me enough to read it non stop.

Would I read another of this authors books? Yes most definitely.

4.0 out of 5 stars legal thriller, December 31, 2011
Lou Mason, a Kansas City attorney, is hired to defend a young woman (Jordan) accused of murdering her therapist. Jordan confesses to the murder, but Lou finds discrepancies in her story and Jordan recants. After an attempt on Lou's life and the murder of Jordan's brother, Lou explores several other characters as possible suspects. The story progresses rapidly, but some of the story lines seem too contrived. However, Cold Truth is a good legal thriller. I received a complimentary copy in exchange for this review.

I just finished reading "The Cold Truth", the third volume of the Lou Mason Thrillers. Joel Goldman's Lou Mason is to Kansas City as Michael Connelly's Mickey Haller is to Los Angeles! Riveting, non-stop action and supspense. Goldman's Lou Mason character continues to develop and grow with each book. I already bought "Deadlocked" and look forward to more great work from Mr. Goldman.

This is a very captivating who-dunnit. The author keeps you guessing about who the bad guy(s) are. I would recommend this author to anyone who enjoys this type of literature. I plan to read more of his books.
