Book Description

If it bleeds, it leads and Gina Davenport's death led the local news that day.

News cameraman, Ted Phillips, captured the plunge of therapist and best selling author, Gina Davenport, from an eighth story window - live - on what had begun as a slow news day. The shattered glass fell like rain. The camera rolled. And Davenport lay mangled on the concrete as a dark pool of blood spread out from her head.

Was it suicide, or cold-blooded murder?

Attorney Lou Mason had no doubt it was murder. Suicides jump out of open windows. Murderers break the glass. He couldn't keep his mind off Gina Davenport's murder. How could he? When an enigmatic young woman turns herself in, claiming she murdered Davenport, Mason takes the case. But something about her story just doesn't add up. Trying to crack the case, Mason dives deep into a black market underworld  -- one run on drugs and dirty money where truth comes at the highest possible price - life.

Cold Truth delivers riveting, page-turning twists and turns in the tradition of crime author James Patterson.

4.0 out of 5 stars solid legal thriller February 1, 2004
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In Kansas City, TV news reporters catch nationally syndicated popular psychiatrist Dr. Gina Davenport falling from her eighth floor office to her death. Her local radio station manager Arthur Hackett and his wife Carol hire lawyer Lou Mason to defend their troubled twenty-one year old daughter Jordan, who confesses that she pushed the doctor out the window.
Lou has doubts as some discrepancies exist in Jordan's account of the event and her actions leading to the murder. Instead he wonders whether former felon, the Svengali-like Centurion Johnson, head of Sanctuary, a place for troubled youth that includes Jordan who is living there, is influencing his client. If the answer is yes as he suspects he wonders how to prove this is so when Jordan seems uninterested in helping her own defense.
Though Lou's latest falling in love is fun, Abby Lieberman' "side confession" is a distracter from a solid legal thriller that never slows down until the final attempt on the hero's life. Lou is a delightful protagonist who tries to do the right thing by his client, but as usual ends up in deep trouble just trying to survive. The support cast, both those recurring and those unique to this plot, provide depth to either the investigation or Lou. Joel Goldman provides another fine tale.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth a Try October 23, 2011
By skhoov
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review. Attorney Lou Mason is caught in a tangle of deception as he attempts to defend a troubled young woman (Jordan Hackett) accused of double murder. Multiple suspects are found and none fit just right except Jordan. I agree with what another reviewer said about this book, "I had a hard time keeping all the characters straight as Goldman introduced them at a rapid-fire pace, resulting in many character sketches but few fully realized personalities." The main story was interesting enough but the ending was a surprise. Not usually my type of book, but worth the read.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting mystery September 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
(Note: I received a free Kindle copy of this book in exchange for my review.)

In Cold Truth, attorney Lou Mason is caught in a tangle of deceit and multiple suspects as he attempts to defend a troubled girl accused of double murder.

I had a hard time keeping all the characters straight as Goldman introduced them at a rapid-fire pace, resulting in many character sketches but few fully realized personalities. The mystery itself was interesting enough, and I didn't suspect the ending.

Overall, I didn't much care about any of the characters, and a romance kindled between Lou and another character seemed abrupt and not very believable - more of a plot device than a real interest between the characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thrilling Ride July 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Joel Goldman has written fourteen novels, with Cold Truth being third in the Lou Mason series. I came late to Goldman's party, not a crasher, but invited when I listened to Joel interviewed by fellow crime-mystery writer, Paul Levine. My interest in the interview was to learn how Goldman became one of Amazon's bestselling authors. Goldman's responses to Levine's questions intensified my writer's curiosity about this highly successful author. So I bought Cold Truth to find out.

Lou Mason is hired to represent twenty-one year old Jordan by her adopted parents, Arthur and Carol Hackett. Jordan is the only person suspected by police when her psychotherapist dies when thrown out of her eighth floor office window. Will this be a typical courtroom drama? Not on your Martindale-Hubbell. Goldman's trial lawyer mind complicates the case by introducing several other characters (too many characters to keep track of, in my view) with competing motives and more complex plot twist. But Goldman makes it all work to the delight of the reader.

The prose are joyfully absent of lawyerly legalese. Unlike another lawyer-turned-author, Goldman writes for his audience, like me, not legal eagles. The pace and rhythm of Goldman's writing benefits from his choice of phrases. My only other criticism for this well done work is Goldman's portrayal of Lou Mason's love interest, Abby Lieberman. Mason falls deeply in love - way to quickly - without bringing the reader into the romance. It left this reader flat. I wondered if Abby would turn out to be the real killer. I understand that Cold Truth is a murder mystery, not a romance novel, but the love affair between Mason and Lieberman is a motivating factor in several scenes central to the story.

More About the Author

Joel Goldman writes crime thrillers to die for. He's the Edgar and Shamus nominated author of three riveting thriller series.

Trial lawyer Lou Mason is a powerful, sexy man, more than six feet of hard muscle and once a keen rugby player. He's loyal and principled, both to a fault. His wry, sarcastic sense of humor and knack for top class banter are disarming, sometimes obscuring a recklessly brave spirit. Passionate about justice, he dives into the dark water, taking on cases others lawyers would run away from.

In Jack Davis' world only liars, drunks and guilty people shake uncontrollably. Then he joins their ranks. After 25 years as an FBI Special Agent, Jack is forced to retire because a mysterious movement disorder that makes him shake, sometimes bending him in half, sometimes strangling his speech. The cause and cure are unknown and Jack's condition colors his entire life. So much so that it ends his FBI career. In his new guise of part time private detective, he can't predict when the shakes will start... he just knows they will. Most of the time he just hopes he isn't holding a gun when it happens because crooks and killers don't give anyone a break.

Alex Stone is a Public Defender, devoted to representing people charged with a crime who can't afford a lawyer. More often than not, her clients and cases are lost causes. But the dismal odds only encourage her. Long, lean, and ropy from years of early-morning workouts, she knows only one way to live and one way to try a case: bear down and go all out.
She's determined to give her indigent clients the same measure of justice the rich and well bred receive. That's what everyone, guilty or innocent, highborn or low, deserves, and that's why she became a public defender. That higher calling matters more than whether her clients are guilty or innocent. But when the system fails to deliver justice, she makes certain justice is done.

If you like heroes you can care about, believe in and root for, you'll love Lou Mason, Jack Davis and Alex Stone. If you like crime thrillers with riveting suspense, jaw dropping twists and page-turning action, you'll love Joel Goldman's novels.
