Are you as tricked recently as I am into buying on demand, same day as theaters, streaming indie movies that have big name stars? And inevitably disappoint? "Cold Turkey" is another on a growing list of movies that show up on indiewire, seem promising from the trailer, and end up being an awful waste of time. Terrible writing. Scenes snatched from other, older, good movies. Deliberately? Unconsciously? Time after time I'm fooled, wondering at the end who these actors were indebted to, to agree to learn the lines and try to make something of these terrible scripts? Agent? Management? Is Peter Bogdanovich the writer/director's uncle? Bogdanovich's worst films are 7 stars better than this turkey. Jean Hantman

This poignant and dark comedy completely encapsulates and satirizes the new-classic family dynamic through the holiday of Thanksgiving. As we are all bombarded with societal pressure to have a classic Thanksgiving i.e. Norman Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post covers of a bygone era - Cold Turkey demonstrates the true realities of modern American life. Bogdanovich plays the distant and functioning alcoholic patriarch of an extended family of half brothers and sisters, all of whom are coming home for the holidays - in need of their father's financial resources and his approval. Eccentric daughter Nina (played by Alicia Witt) has not come home in 15 years, and adds her outspoken chaotic tornado of a personality, forcing everyone to interact and show their true colors. This movie is well written, very close to home for so many of us, and the ensemble cast including Peter Bogdanovich, Alicia Witt, Cheryl Hines, Amy Ferguson, Sonia Walger and Victoria Tennant is spot-on, creating a world that will draw you in like part of the family. Great film, dark comedy, all adults will enjoy!!
