This book presents an interesting summary of the Cold War. It gives a good summary of the major events of the Cold War, and it has many interesting pictures and pieces of information. 5.0 out of 5 stars 46 years in the making, I guess, May 19, 2002
This review is from: Cold War: An Illustrated History, 1945-1989 (Hardcover)
Everyone and their brother has released a book on World War II. Or any other period in history, for that matter. The Vietnam and Korean wars, its all been told a thousand times. But few books that I've ever found in general circulation cover the broad topic of the entire Cold War. Issacs and crew cover the period with as much detail as possible in such a complicated and even sometimes confusing period of time. They do a superb job, with each chapter covering a specific feature of the Cold War, such as the Cuban Missle crisis and more interesting, though less known of events. Issacs provides a very objective viewpoint, and makes reading Cold War: An Illustrated History not so much as a chore as some history books can be.
The pictures provided are really good, and provide many pictures of the key players in the game of chess that was played on Earth throughout the decades.
I rather enjoyed the various side bars presented throughout the book, each one touching upon various aspects of the Cold War, such as spies, or even entertainment.
If you have any interest in the Cold War, or are just plain curious as to what made the world what it is now, this is your best place to start. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellant general read on a complex period in history..., April 26, 2001
This review is from: Cold War: An Illustrated History, 1945-1989 (Hardcover)
If you're looking for general history on the 40 to 50 year period known as the "Cold War", than this book along with the CNN program "Cold War" is for you...contrary to a few of the other reviewers, I liked this book in it's general state and I would not want to extoll my opinions concerning morality here. I'm sure that there are other books that would welcome that type of review, but this book is just for the general history reader and presented in a fabulous format! Maps, color photograhs and charts along with clear and interesting prose make this an excellant "launching pad" to the struggle and to other more detailed views. Highly recommended.

This review is from: Cold War: An Illustrated History, 1945-1989 (Hardcover)
In contrast to the views of the reviewer below this is a VERY objective book. The U.S./CIA Cold War activities resulted in the support and establishment of murderous dictatorships in Latin America which were every bit as cruel/oppressive as those of our Communist enemies. There was also the unjust war we waged in Vietnam which killed over a million people. Finally there was the CIA/American backed coup which resulted in the murder of the ELECTED president of Chile, Allende, and the establishement of the dictator Pinochet who is now being prosecuted for mass murder. This book addresses these and other issues instead of using the recent right wing Reagonite rhetoric which equates the U.S. as a benevolent force of freedom as opposed to those evil Communists. The book, while covering many topics and areas related to the cold war, is clearly written and informative. The fantastic illustrations only add to this books appeal. It is time American citizens realize the Cold War was NOT a battle between freedom and tyranny but an amoral conflict between diametrically opposed economic systems struggling to control world markets and resources.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cold War, January 13, 2011
This is a brilliant look at the cold war period and the events that lead up to it. It is comprehensive enough without becoming too dry to plough through and I found it engaging throughout. The illustrations are well produced and the chapters are full of detail. Well recommended if you are interested in learning more about this period of history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely well written, and short accessible chapters, December 10, 2009
By
This review is from: Cold War: An Illustrated History, 1945-1989 (Hardcover)
This book is an ideal introduction to the Cold War. It's concise, but never simplistic. The chapters are 10-20 pages on average, and cover topics which have generated libraries of literature. Still, the chapters on the Berlin blockade, the VietNam war or the Cuba crisis give you the feeling that you have read all that you needed to know about the topic. The chapters are easy reads, made even more accessible with excellent photographs, cartoons and maps. Highly recommended, and certainly not just for the coffee table.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and interesting., September 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cold War: An Illustrated History, 1945-1989 (Hardcover)
I bought this book having never seen the BBC series, although I found it incredibly useful and informative. I studied the topic "US-Soviet Relations in the Nuclear Age" in my high school modern history class this year and last [years/grades 11 and 12] and for someone who was quite young when the Cold War came to an end this is a helpful book in that it explains events and the lead up to such events in a simple and easy to understand manner. The photographs are wonderful, and personally I was able to gain a greater insight into what it was that I was actually studying. All in all this book is written in quite a clear and concise style, and, with the inclusion of some brilliant images, is not only highly informative but incredibly interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very informative, often chilling, June 16, 1999

This review is from: Cold War: An Illustrated History, 1945-1989 (Hardcover)
COLD WAR brings it all back to those of us old enough to have experienced those long years of superpower nuclear stalemate. After reading this fine volume I'm looking forward to that new Cold War fictional series I've heard so much about. I just ordered the first book, THE TRIUMPH AND THE GLORY, and hope it lives up to the high standards set by COLD WAR, AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellant for a younger generation, May 31, 1999
This review is from: Cold War: An Illustrated History, 1945-1989 (Hardcover)
This is an excellant recount of the cold war. I grew during the latter years of Reagan and glasnost and never really knew much about the 45 year conflict that shaped the second half of the 20th century. This book helped me to understand the scope, maening, events, and lasting impact of the cold war on history and current politics. I highly recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Pictures, Biased Analysis, February 23, 1999

This review is from: Cold War: An Illustrated History, 1945-1989 (Hardcover)
This book presents an interesting summary of the Cold War. It gives a good summary of the major events of the Cold War, and it has many interesting pictures and pieces of information. It's main drawback is it's biased coverage and analysis of events. It seems to present the view that the Cold War was mainly the fault of the United States. It does not seem to give enough responsibility to the Soviet Union for its role in causing the events. More complete and fair analysis could have made this a great historical resource for learning about and understanding the major event of the post-WWII world. Instead, it is only a somewhat interesting collection of pictures and information, but it lacks historical completeness. There is still room out there for another book to be written to be the "definitive history" of the Cold War. Any takers?

p.s.: Keep your eye out for the picture showing Ted Turner at the White House. This book is a companion to the CNN-produced documentaries, and CNN is owned by Ted Turner. This may give evidence of and a clue why the bias is there.

2.0 out of 5 stars Apparently, the victors DON'T write history., March 1, 1999

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Cold War: An Illustrated History, 1945-1989 (Hardcover)
This book, of course, is a companion to the 24-part series on CNN. While it is comprehensive, well-photographed, and well-edited, Ted Turner's Team just can't help taking the revisionist's view that the Cold War was fought by morally equivalent superpowers. The US certainly didn't wear a white hat during the Cold War, but putting us on the same moral level as a reactive, authoritarian regime that crushed all dissent, inside and outside the country, is pure folly. A good example is the coverage of Stalin's Gulag and the McCarthy era. McCarthyism was truly a dark spell in US history which led to careers and reputations being ruined. However, I don't remember millions of suspected subversives/dissidents being worked/starved to death in Alaska. Better dead than Ted!!!
