Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A freak car crash that kills geneticist Tim Bolton and leaves a metal sliver embedded in the brain of his six-month-old son, Tanner, is the core of this first-rate supernatural thriller debut. Eight years after the accident, Tanner begins hearing voices?including Tim's?and the boy and his mother, Jennifer, find themselves at the center of a sinister conspiracy involving Tim's experiments. Amos loads her story with intricate details that lead to a knockout ending, and she breathes life into Jennifer and Tanner through scenes filled with maternal instinct and preadolescent innocence. This tender relationship between mother and son remains the only certainty in a novel filled with convincing twists.

This is the first book I have read by Beth Amos and now I'm a big fan. I was on the edge of my seat from page one. This is a story about a widow and her son. A freak accident killed Jennifer's husband and lodged a metal fragment in her 6 month old son's head. Several years later, her son is talking to her dead husband and knowing things that no else knows. In a mad dash to save her son and herself she must find out the truth before it's too late. In a plot with many twists and turns you try to figure out who you can trust. This book is a winner

4.0 out of 5 stars HE HEARS DEAD PEOPLE..., September 30, 2006

This review is from: Cold White Fury (Mass Market Paperback)
When Jennifer Bolton, her husband, Tim, and infant son, Tanner, are involved in a seemingly freak car accident, her husband, one of the leading geneticists in the country, is killed. Only Jennifer and Tanner survive, and they go on to lead seemingly uneventful lives for the next eight years, until Tanner has a minor bicycle accident that necessitates him being checked out at the hospital. While there, a mistake occurs during what should have been some routine tests, and suddenly Tanner's life is forever changed. An ordinary little boy, Tanner now become extraordinary with paranormal capabilities. He also hears dead people.

This transformation sets into play a number of unsettling events, and the tragedy that changed the lives of both Jennifer and Tanner interjects itself into the present. It is difficult for Jennifer to know who is friend and who is foe, as things are not always what they seem. Moreover, there is a conspiracy afoot to bring about a new world order, and Jennifer and Tanner may hold the key to the success of the conspiracy.. The only question is whether Jennifer and Tanner with be able to survive the dragnet laid out by the conspirators.

this is a plot driven book, and it moves along at a brisk clip. While some of it is predictable, it has a few twists and turns that will keep the reader turning the pages. Although the plot is fairly strong, some of the characters are two dimensional. Moreover, Jennifer, one of the main protagonists, is not a particularly sympathetic one. Still, notwithstanding the two dimensional characterizations that predominate, this is still a relatively entertaining read for those who enjoy fiction with a paranormal twist.

2.0 out of 5 stars Concept was original, but plot was amazing silly., November 7, 2005

This review is from: Cold White Fury (Mass Market Paperback)
Beth Amos's "Cold White Fury" tries to be a very good supernatural thriller, as Jennifer Bolton, a widowed mother tries to protect her son Tanner, who through an accidental MRI develops supernatural abilaties. As Tanner's "gift" is becomes more known by the doctors, a old shadowy conspiracy(the most ridiculous part of the book) chases Jennifer, her son, and a sympathetic doctor. The silliness continues as the second rate "Stonecutter" wannabes plot to kill a senator and go by silly code names, and Jennifer finds that there are not one, but TWO people in her life that have been deceiving her to serve other ends. Only merits 2 stars.
