3.0 out of 5 stars Withers series was beginning to, July 2, 2008

PLOT: Forced to retire to Southern California due to her asthma, spinster sleuth Hildegarde Withers is called in to investigate some nasty valentines sent to workers in a Hollywood studio that produces cartoons starring Peter Penguin.

When one of the recipients of the valentines is murdered in a most unusual way, Hildegarde telephones her old cohort Oscar Piper in New York, and he recognizes the method and travels to Los Angeles to help her investigate.

Hildegarde and Oscar try to find the connection between the people receiving the notes before another of the group is killed.

REVIEW: A later entry in the Hildegarde Withers series, this is not as satisfying as many of the older ones. While reading I kept thinking it was waaayy too drawn out (then I noticed it is a longer version of a story Palmer wrote called "A Valentine for the Victim.")

The setting -- a cartoon studio -- is interesting, but it does go on a bit too long (and it's less than 150 pages!), although the scene where the killer is unmasked was pretty interesting.

An okay read for fans of the series.
