About the Author

Michael Buffington (Costa Mesa, CA) has been an outspoken ColdFusion advocate since 1995, when ColdFusion was in its infancy. Using ColdFusion, he developed several high profile e-commerce applications. In 1997, Buffington founded Stompzine.com, an underground music review site. In 1998, he founded PricePulse Inc., a product pricing and information search engine, which was powered by ColdFusion. PricePulse changed its name to Price.com a year later, grew 900per cent in size within 2 years, and continues to be serious competitor in the consumer information market.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for a beginner, July 11, 2002
This review is from: ColdFusion 5® Developer's Guide (Paperback)
This book is pretty helpful if you already know Cold Fusion. It is exactly what the title says, Cold Fusion 5. What makes this book standout is the sample application that is built within the book (Skate.Shop). This application is an e-commerce app that will actually work when you are complete. I especially liked the database chapter. It will really help someone who isn't very familiar with database creation. Overall, I would recommend this book to more advanced users. Though those users may not need to be led by hand to develop an e-commerce site.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, October 30, 2001
This review is from: ColdFusion 5® Developer's Guide (Paperback)
Not only is the text easy and fun to read, the content is solid. The author knows his stuff, and it shows. I thought I was a veteran ColdFusion developer, but I feel like I've doubled what I know about ColdFusion because of this book.

Buffington does an in depth case study of a very clean and efficient ecommerce engine, complete with an online administration tool that makes use of ColdFusion 5.0's new graphing features.

I've read all of the new ColdFusion 5.0 books, and this one has been the most enjoyable so far. Good job!

4.0 out of 5 stars Well rounded tome and covers a lot of ground, March 12, 2004

Douglas White (San Antonio, TX. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: ColdFusion 5® Developer's Guide (Paperback)
Well rounded tome and covers a lot of ground. Where is the CD? For $59.99 should have a Disc. Includes a nice overview of the Software Development Life Cycle. Section on Advanced Error Handling is helpful. Complete coverage of subtleties and easily misunderstood aspects of Cold Fusion, e.g. if session time out is set by application code versus what is set CFA. Nice discussion of how to extend CF via other languages, tags, COM, COBRA....Assumes developer is also the DBA and server administrator is written with the latter two roles in mind to include many screenshots for configuring the server for both roles. Author's prose is light and humorous e.g. when describing the caller scope an analogy is made to vomit leaving happy people on amusement park rides (well it was funny in the book). In all a solid book that has a lot to offer
