About Coleman
More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.

In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

I think in every Western there is a shot of guys sitting around a camp fire after a long day of riding/bulding a railroad/working a gold mine/robbing banks and trains/etc. In almost every shot, the guys are eating unidentifiable food off of blue tin plates. Well, you can't necessarily be in the movies, but you can have the plates.

This set consists of four plates, four bowls and four mugs. Each piece is very sturdy is enameled in that famous blue (or red) with white specks. Kind of like looking up at a clear night sky when you're out camping. The pieces are sized well and should hold up to a lot of use outdoors.

But here are the three reasons to get this set. First, the set is well made. You won't have to worry about sawing through your paper plate (and your leg), or your plastic plate flipping over. You won't have to worry about your hot coffee melting through the flimsy paper cup, or your half-eaten plastic bowl of cereal blowing away.

Second, hauling paper and plastic dinnerware to a campsite or a picnic site creates garbage. Garbage attracts pests and animals. Garbage stinks and creates litter. Garbage eventually has to be buried somewhere to rot, sometimes for hundreds or thousands of years. Or you could just use this set, wash it off and then use it again. Your call...

Third, it just looks cool. Plain and simple.

The bottom line is good value, good for the environment, good purchase for you!

Overall, this set isn't bad for what it's intended.

I was disappointed when a cup and plate were chipped out of the box. It was something which happened after it was placed in the box, as the chips/dust were still in the box. Something Coleman could prevent with a little more care in packaging. However, I don't expect that to happen. They're having things made in China for a reason, and quality isn't one of them.

I also picked up a red set like this from a local retailer, and it also had a cup and bowl which were chipped.

It's nothing a little enamel can't patch up, but it's the point of the matter.

The plates are decent size, and work well for camping. They're not huge, but work out well nonetheless.

I am only rating this at 3 stars, simply for the packaging issue. It shouldn't be a problem, and Coleman is cutting corners. Personally, I'd rather pay $5 or $10 more, and have their stuff made here in the USA where quality would be better.

This was a wonderful and sturdy set of dishes. Used it for 6 days of camping and enjoyed them every meal. Very strudy and wash up easily. Only issue was we chiped a mug when a metal handle fell on it. Need to be careful not to drop them on hard surfaces (metal, rock, etc) as they are porclein coated.

Still love the set.

I bought these because I didn't have any camping dishes and these recalled camping trips from when I was a child, with all the blue and white-flecked enamelware.

When I used the set for the first time I noticed that several pieces had spots where the enamel had chipped during shipping and at least one spot where a bubble had formed in the enamel or something, because a perfectly round spot with no enamel was found.

These problems were not enough for me to go through the hassle of returning them, but I'd have preferred they were not there.

Product detail states "Made in USA". Opened the package took a plate out and there's a big sticker that reads "Made in China". I haven't had a problem with it but definitely disappointed with the false advertising.

These camp dishes from Coleman are exactly what you would expect. They are fairly lightweight, durable, and fantastic for camping. The price is more than half what the same type dishes cost at our local sporting goods stores.

Love this stuff! It travels well packed on the mule or functions great in the kitchen for the grandchildren.

This is a great set for camping. The bowls are generous, I even use them as mini mixing bowls when we camp. The set has service for four, but it really isn't too much for two or three people. Every piece is versatile enough for prep and serving as well as dining. And clean up is very easy. We store the set in the original box to keep it safe from the wear and tear of camping. All enamelware will chip if banged around. But it will last many, many years if stored well. This set seems to be at least as durable as a set I paid three times as much for. We have more than satisfied.
