We just went through a power failure due to icing in New England and this lantern provided an amazing amount of light in our 'darkest hours'. I am using rechargable batteries in it and recommend it to anyone wanting a bright, relatively inexpensive power failure light. You can read by it or even have enough light to cook dinner. The new CREE LEDs are the key when shopping for a flashlight or lantern. I have a Coleman flashlight with the same technology bulb and it is like holding a searchlight when walking my dog along our dark country roads at night.

The exterior of this Coleman 3AA MicroPacker Lantern looks well thought out,
and nicely designed. The reviews almost universally claim it’s a terrific lantern,
but sadly I was extremely disappointed by the almost complete lack of useful
light it produces.

I really can’t imagine how they were able to measure the 80 Lumens of light
given off by this lantern, since in one spot it’s very bright but only in a small
area, and in other areas it’s too dim to be of any use at all. Perhaps they
just averaged all of their readings, but the human eye doesn’t have that luxury.

The interior design just doesn’t work to produce even lighting,
and the sliding reflector doesn’t improve the lighting situation at all.

The only portion of the lantern that functions is the Emergency strobe mode.
It’s extremely bright as it flashes on and off, and it would be useful if you were
stuck on a dark road and wanted to alert other drivers of your situation.

I rarely return things unless they’re damaged since the return postage is on
me, but in this case I’ll take the loss and send it back.

Nice compact design. The handle on top can be cleverly camouflage as it folds on itself. At the back, you can raise a panel to expose a reflector panel. This way you block some lights at the back and direct more lights to the front. Very lightweight and just perfect to hang in the tent.

This lantern uses three AAs batteries. Not as bright as my other compact LED lanterns.

I bought one and liked it so much I bought four more of these lanterns for use in power emergency and for keeping in my survival kit. It puts out a great deal of light for such a small package and is great looking to boot. I wish they had had these during my backpacking days.

I will agree with other reviewers that the light is very bright and can shine in your eyes. This is a CREE bulb and the design inherently shines/reflects up and down. The shield in the back will elevate to concentrate light in one direction.

This lantern is compact and puts out a good bit of light. It is great for power outages at home.

I thought that this lamp would be a step up from the Coleman MicroPacker, which didn't look like it would be able to light up a small tent, but this lamp is not that great either. I tried lighting it in my dark bedroom and while I could walk around the room without running into the furniture, I was not able to read with it-even when I had it right next to the book.

I think that in the future if I want a good small lantern I may go with a gas mantle type because I know they will throw much more light for their size.

I would not rccomend this light if you wanted to read or do any detailed work with it: not bright enough!

Purchased one in January and a second on several months later. Both have quit working, liked all aspects of the lanterns but they obviously are fragile or have another problem. Coleman will replace they under warranty, but this model is discontinued as of 8/14 and Coleman is replacing them with the similar 'yellow' lantern. No hassle with Coleman, I am just disappointed with their longevity.

Does everything it said it would - bright and powerful. And it is very compact; not much bigger than a small flashlight. Love it!

I am on the fence about this lantern because the price and mediocre light output. The light output is bright enough to read by but for such a high loom I was really expecting brighter. Now, I really like the 'quality' of the light out. I do not know how to description light output but it gives off a 'non-reflective' light. It doesn't make reading tiresome, my eyes don't need to squint, and it is simple a more comfortable light. This lantern is twice the price of the identical product that doesn't have LEDs but definitely doesn't put out twice the light. I think two of those lanterns against one of these is a good, possible alternative.

It sits in my sailboat in a plastic pencil box to keep dry. Don't use it much, but it's there for the time when I get stuck down at the other end of the lake at dusk, or feel like a night sail. The handle allows me to hang it from the boom. As others have noted, it casts a diffuse light not focused in any particular direction. The slide-up reflector directs the light somewhat, but is not a substitute for a focused beam flashed light if that is what you need. It serves my purpose, which is to shed some light locally and to be seen by others. The strobe light should be visible at a good distance in an emergency.
