4.0 out of 5 stars Work as designed
The other reviewer clearly has not used the product. Ive been beach camping for years, and these are indespensible. They're meant to be filled and buried in the sand. They've held our large 10x15 family tent in 30mph winds quite well, so i just bought 4 more packs to use with our other tents and shelters. Bring a small shovel or trowel, fill them with sand and bury...

These are not bags that you fill up. They are small squares with four holes to tie together to hold sand/rocks etc. How they would function as tent stakes is very questionable. There are sand bags you fill and I would look for these. I am returning my purchase. For a Coleman item, I am dissappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars they work when used properly, January 30, 2012

I have used these for 2 years now to stake our tent and shelter on beaches while boat in camping in Florida on several barrier islands. they are useless without a shovel but once set properly they will hold your tent so securely that our tent will find other ways to fail!!!

To use I dig a hole about 1 foot deep and 1 foot around then poor some water into the hole to stiffen the sand followed by laying the anchor in the bottom of the whole then fill in back over the anchor. followed by several buckets of water over each anchor to cement them in place. Then attach your cording to the anchors accordingly. these anchors have held our Eureka tent to the ground like glue as well as our screen shelter though a severe thunderstorm with 40+mph winds... the tent survived beautifully but the shelter unfortunately failed at the poles (cheap steel poles broke) and i attribute that to the anchors holding it so well preventing the tent to flex...

Good:

1. cheap (not a heart breaker when you lose one)

2. they work very well in sand or snow i would imagine but haven't used them in that yet i suppose you could set a large rock in them if in such terrain.

3. simple to use

bad:

1. take pliers and remove the metal ring that they come with and replace it with a stainless or aluminum ring or carabiner since they will break off anyway

2. cheap... ha ha yeah seriously you could probably make these and make them much stronger for about the same price but for 10 or 11 bucks why waste the hour or 2 to make them

3. only really work in sand and you can't really fill them and use them as weights since they are just a square piece of fabric

Anyway I would give 5 stars because really they are a great value but that stinking metal ring with short rope extension just ruins it and requires you to fix them up... I redid mine with some out of service climbing carabiners i had laying around.

That's it I would definitely recommend them to whom ever would be camping in sand of snow I'm glad i bought them and everyone who sees them is shocked how securely they hold my tents. I really didn't mean this to be so long but the 2 star reviews aren't doing these justice they work as they are designed. IMOP

Work well for pitching your tent in sand. Cheaper than the exact same product with other retailers' logos emblazoned upon them.

I guess if you dig 2 ft deep holes, and fill these with heavy rocks it might work. Did not work for me in the wind at the beach. I filled the bags with sand, tried burying them and the tent just blew all over the place. Not for windy areas.
