Coleman's Two-Mantle Propane Lantern is as steady as they come. This lantern is pressure-regulated to control fuel flow, so you get consistent light in any temperature. This Coleman propane lantern lights with a match and has a control knob that works like a dimmer switch to let you adjust the brightness and burn time. The porcelain ventilators will prevent rusting and help this lantern last you a long time.

This lantern operates on a 16.4-ounce cylinder of Coleman propane (not included), and will burn for up to seven hours on high or 14 hours on low. With a unique, stable base and foldable feet it just doesn't get much more convenient than this.

About Coleman
The Coleman Company has been creating and innovating products for recreational outdoor use since W.C. Coleman started selling gasoline-powered lanterns in 1900. Inventor of the hugely popular fold-up camp stove, Coleman developed a plastic liner for his galvanized steel coolers in 1957--the birth of the modern cooler--and the company has been improving their utility and design ever since. The array of products that bear the Coleman name now includes just about everything you might need to work or play outdoors, from tents and sleeping bags to boats, backpacks, and furniture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but has some quirks June 2, 2006
I keep this lantern handy for power outages. I plan to take it camping next time I go. I recommend keeping the Styrofoam case that protects the glass globe. It's much easier to dismantle and store the unit without fear of breaking the globe.

This two-mantle lantern throws out lots of light. It starts easily with a match.

I don't like the way the propane tank sits in the base. To move the lantern from one room to the next you must support the plastic base, otherwise it falls off.

Very important! Do not over-tighten the top ventilator nut. The glass globe will crack because it has no room to expand when it heats up. I cracked two globes before contacting Coleman, who showed me the error of my ways.

Despite the problems, this is a great lantern, and it's much easier to use than Coleman's pump version that uses liquid fuel.

****UPDATE**** October 2011. I still use the same lantern for camping and power outages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Night turned to Day April 8, 2012
Me and some buddies go camping once a year and I (the camping guru) would always bring the battery operated bulb lanterns. Well, this past year, a friend brought along one of these and the difference was staggering. If you turn that dial as high as it goes, you can practically simulate daylight. He put it on a stand and we were able to spot a snake that was, ironically, closest to my lantern. Needless to say, I purchased one of my own the first chance I got.

I prefer this model to the self-ignition version due to the fact that the more hands-on something is, the more proficient one becomes in using it. Also, it will be easier to spot when something is wrong with the unit this way. The last thing one wants to discover is that something has rendered their lantern useless that could very well have been predicted and fixed before the next outing.

Insofar as the base goes, I have done away with the flaps that come with it and fashioned my own out of a paint can. I sprayed it with Rustoleum and then cut a hole in the top to barely accommodate the propane cylinder and flared out the base in order to create a near indestructible base that weighs practically nothing and can be strapped to the outside of a pack without worry about rust. I also went so far as to keep a carabiner on hand to attach to the handle and, along with some 550 cord, I am able to affix it to any tree, should the need arise.

This has come in handy for those times when I have lost a race against the sun and still have a couple miles to go before making it the distance I had planned to travel for the day before resting. When these times strike, I attach it to a propane hose and keep the tank in my backpack (to better accommodate the weight so I can keep the light held high for longer). I have even, from time to time, attached it to a stick to hold out before me to better show the terrain and judge elevation better.

I keep another one at home (permanently affixed to a hose w/ a stand), along with some 20lb propane canisters for whenever the weather knocks out power. I'll have a strong light source to keep working and have even used it to show my way when shoveling snow at night.

To the point: This lantern is one of those purchases that will always come in handy. It can be used for emergency home situations and outdoor, alike. Keep an eye on the mantles and when they go on sale, stock up. You may never need all of them, but they will at least be around in case you do.

Finally, a word of WARNING: This lantern can get hot enough to ignite or melt nearby objects. For this reason, it would not be very safe to use in a tent or around combustible items. I have seen people, pinched in an emergency, use this as a tent heater; needless to say, I'd have to be in a very difficult situation before I attempted going down that same route. I definitely wouldn't fall asleep in a tent with this on.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lantern itself is perfect. March 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
As others have said this lantern kit doesn't come with a container. Using the box to store it seemes like a good solution but its hard to put it back into the original box without damaging the mantels. You'll want to have lots of these on hand anyway because they are cheap but very fragile.

Only other negative is the new Coleman mantles that this comes with use metal springs to install rather than the old shoe string style. After installing according to the directions both eventually sprung off and fell apart. I always thought the old design was perfect so replaced easily with those. Seems like a case of product development taking one step forward and two back.

Other than mantles and box this is a great lantern for the price.

Very bright, and efficient usage of fuel for the output!! Love it!
