4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but has some quirks
I keep this lantern handy for power outages. I plan to take it camping next time I go. I recommend keeping the Styrofoam case that protects the glass globe. It's much easier to dismantle and store the unit without fear of breaking the globe.

As others have said this lantern kit doesn't come with a container. Using the box to store it seemes like a good solution but its hard to put it back into the original box without damaging the mantels. You'll want to have lots of these on hand anyway because they are cheap but very fragile.

I keep this lantern handy for power outages. I plan to take it camping next time I go. I recommend keeping the Styrofoam case that protects the glass globe. It's much easier to dismantle and store the unit without fear of breaking the globe.

This two-mantle lantern throws out lots of light. It starts easily with a match.

I don't like the way the propane tank sits in the base. To move the lantern from one room to the next you must support the plastic base, otherwise it falls off.

Very important! Do not over-tighten the top ventilator nut. The glass globe will crack because it has no room to expand when it heats up. I cracked two globes before contacting Coleman, who showed me the error of my ways.

Despite the problems, this is a great lantern, and it's much easier to use than Coleman's pump version that uses liquid fuel.

****UPDATE**** October 2011. I still use the same lantern for camping and power outages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Coleman 2-Mantle Propane Lantern. (Not 'Instant Start' ), January 15, 2007

Great lantern. Lightweight, well designed (except that the 'legs' tend to fall off the tank when you carry it. One other disappointment. I bought Coleman Lantern Lighters (Prod. # 503A) to install in each unit, only to find that this is one of the few Coleman lanterns that will not accomodate the lighter. That's a shame, as the lighter is a great convenience. Otherwise, I was pleased, and the recipients (they were Christmas gifts for teenage nephews) are very happy.

Only other negative is the new Coleman mantles that this comes with use metal springs to install rather than the old shoe string style. After installing according to the directions both eventually sprung off and fell apart. I always thought the old design was perfect so replaced easily with those. Seems like a case of product development taking one step forward and two back.

Other than mantles and box this is a great lantern for the price.

Very bright, and efficient usage of fuel for the output!! Love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great lantern., August 5, 2008
This review is from: Coleman Two-Mantle Propane Lantern (Sports)
This is an all-around great lantern for camping. It's really bright when it's turned up, but in most cases you won't need that much, so you can turn it down and expect quite a bit more time out of it. But it is nice to have the extra brightness when you need it -- I haven't seen an electric one that can even come close.

Yeah, the base can come off pretty easily, but I don't mind it too much. I only use the base when it's sitting on something anyway, right? If I'm carrying it around I just leave the base behind. Often times I will hang the lantern up high to increase its lighting distance, and I don't need the base in those cases either.

Coleman 2-Mantle Lantern - GreenI would reconmend this to any one who needs a great lantern that when camping, fishing,or just need a light around for outside. Both my husband and I have tipped over this light many times and has even been dropped a few times and still don't have to replace the mantles like you do on others that even just get tipped over. Great Price and all propane tanks at any store will work.

The lantern is easy to manipulate, well designed. The light is very bright. But one of the mantles got a big hole burnt on it during pre-lightening and it's unsafe to use broken mantle due to the description of the manual. So I guess users should always have some back-up mantles at hand when using this lantern.

Well Coleman may be the "OUTDOOR Co" but I didn't know their lanterns were only for outdoor.

There is nothing in the Amazon details or the outside packaging, but when you read the instructions (I know -I'm strange that way")it says never to use in enclosed space such as a camper, tent or home. OUTDOOR use only.

So its unsafe to use indoors for power cuts

Coleman & Amazon - this warning needs to be on the OUTSIDE of the box and in the on line details of the product.

Very disappointing.
