The striker is smooth and should have a rough surface to strike a match.

I carry all of any personal medications in these containers. I got labels printed at my pharmacy, so carrying them on my person would be legal. They are water-tight, based on my experience of having one fall from a shirt pocket while fishing. They are crush-resistant. I tested one by driving over it in a Dodge Ram 1500 extended cab.--------no cracks or visible signs of crushing. That was the one that went 'swimming'.

Since no one else mentions dimensions, here they are: 1.135 inches diameter at its widest point (at the base of the lid), 1.020 inches diameter for most of the body, 3.090 inches length (incl. the flint on the bottom and cap secured tightly).

I replaced the original matches with the excellent UCO Stormproof Matches, twin pack (50 matches). Cutting the striker paper from the UCO matchbox (and/or using the spare striker in the UCO pack) and placing some strikers inside the tube, I fit in 16 to 17 UCO matches by placing half head in, and half tail in. I had to cut approx. 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch off of the matches' tails to get them to fit below the mouth of the open container.

If you are wondering why I did not use UCO Stormproof Match Case Kit, I do have some of those too. The UCO match case can be had in yellow/orange or OD green, holds 25 matches, but is much greater in overall diameter (1.535 inches). For some uses, like a small kit or backup kit, the slimmer Coleman is more ideal, and also a little cheaper, and readily found at your local W@l-Mart.

Other thoughts: the orange color is nice because if you drop it, it will be easier to spot (esp. in ground-cover). The flint on the bottom is a nice touch I suppose but could have been wider. It definitely is only good for a few uses. A little more utility from the bottom gadget would have pushed this to 5 stars. Some match cases would have a button compass there instead. A more durable (and waterproof) ceramic or stone-based striker paper substitute would have been a good idea.

This Item is defiantly a must have! I picked up two of them at a local Walmart. I really only bought it because it is a small, watertight container I planned on using to keep fire starting material for a camping/survival kit. When I opened the canister, there were about 30 or so matches, and a small plastic baggy with striking paper in it, the matches fit rather tight, but with a small pop on your palm they came out fine, so i was rather pleased, i would keep one marked, for the matches, and the other would be marked as my tinder, upon further inspection, i realized how much better this product became, on the bottom, as you can see in the image there is a little black line, well that line turns out to be a piece of flint, while it isn't a very large piece, its enough to save you once or twice, and it throws pretty good sparks from a rather tiny thing, all in all, this is a steal for anyone with an emergency, camping, hunting, or survival kit, get a few, and give em away, its not like its denting the wallet

Walmart sells this exact product for only ONE DOLLAR. So economically speaking... you know what to do. Read the title of my review.

The case is great! Seems to be made of a very durable plastic that probably won't break in most circumstances; I can only imagine it shattering if you put all your weight on it. The case is very lightweight. It is also waterproof. I've submerged it underwater and it remained dry on the inside. The bright orange color is an added benefit as it makes it easier to find in the dark.

The bottom of the case comes with a small strip of flint. It produces small sparks and can probably only be used for around 20 strikes. I've successfully lighted a 100% cotton ball with this small flint.

The product comes with 25 matches and a sticker strike plate. To be honest the quality of the matches and strike plate are CRAPPY. I cannot start a fire with the matches and the plate. I tried to use the matches and plate in conjunction with other matches/strike plates that I own, but I could not for the life of me get them lit. They are just poor quality, which is why I gave this product 4 stars. However, if your looking for a solid waterproof container for your tinder or etc, look no further.

The case itself seems fairly sturdy and waterproof. I have not tested thoroughly yet but it seems to do the job. It holds almost all of the matches that were delivered with the product and is fairly compact. The only problem I have is I thought that there would be place for the striking surface to be held in place as you strike a match. However, there is not. You would have to place the striking surface on some solid surface and hold it in place while you strike the match. Not very intuitive.

The case is just as good as the ones you find at sporting goods stores. Downside to all the ones I got was the striker sucked on everyone of them, couldn't get a single match to light off of it. Strikers were mostly covered with glue, but even when they weren't I just couldn't get any matches I had to light off them. Just for the price I got them for it was worth it just for the case, but need to find a separate striker to keep with them.
