Solid, Comfortable Cot, September 19, 2006
This review is from: Coleman Exponent Outfitter Cot (Sports)
I bought this cot for occasional use and first tried it this summer near Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons for a week of scout camp. It held up well and the larger size was very comfortable. However, there are some issues you'll want to know about before you buy.
On the positive side, the cot, which is meant for car camping, goes up easily and held up well. The large size made for very comfortable sleeping. The frame itself was reasonably quiet and stable.
On the downside, one of the clips on the hanging storage pocket accessory was broken on arrival, thus that feature was useless. Also, some of the plastic inserts, which are used to quiet the frame, were very poorly attached, which means you are likely to lose a few over time.
The only other issue to be aware of is that the aluminum braces that fit on either end of the cot are each attached to the frame of the cot by a plastic part that fits into a groove in the metal frame. The groove is not particularly well machined and cuts into the plastic part each time you set it up and take it down, so it is only a matter of time before the plastic insert is completely cut off by the metal frame. At that point, you'll have to buy replacement parts from Coleman.
Conclusions:
* Frame is rather standard, but the large footprint means the cot is stable. It is a bit heavy, though. For car camping only.
* The cot itself is very comfortable--I used it for a week with an Exped inflatable pad and slept nicely.
* The design of the end braces (specifically the attachment points) is not good. With use over time, the plastic inserts will be cut off by the rough groove in the metal frame. A simpler design for this part--more like a US military style cot--would have been a better choice and yielded a much longer lasting product with less maintenance. Maybe that's why Coleman chose this route........?
* The storage pocket accessory is cheaply put together and Q&A not very good--don't rely on it working right out of the box. Once I get the replacement part, it will probably work very nicely.
* Overall, for car camping, this is not a bad choice, but if you plan to use the cot frequently, you would be smarter to go with something simpler on the end braces.
* In terms of cost performance, you can also probably do somewhat better. If cost is an issue for you, watch for year end closeouts or similar at your local sporting goods store.
Hope this helps!

Large, but much better than sleeping on the ground, November 28, 2007
This review is from: Coleman Exponent Outfitter Cot (Sports)
Who it's for: the camper who won't be carrying it very far. This comfortable cot is great for getting you up off the ground and has lots of useful pockets for storing your stuff.
Who it's not for: a hiker. It's way too large heavy and unwieldy! Fits great in your pickup truck bed, not so much in your backpack.

camping just got better!, June 4, 2011

I got 2 of these for myself and hubby and I lash them together with velcro straps to make one large bed for camping. I use Therm-a-rest pads on top and they are so warm & comfy. I love the storage compartments on the side and I also store stuff underneath the cot as well to keep my tent nice and neat. 2 of them fits perfectly inside the bedroom side of the new Cougar Flats II tent from Columbia - I set it up in the middle of the double doorways (so we have our own door and we still have walking room along the sides). I will simply purchase a memory foam queen topper to create our "queen sized bed" feel when camping. Way way WAY better than any queen sized airbed (those are cold and act like a trampoline if your partner tosses and turns in sleep).
