About Coleman
The Coleman Company has been creating and innovating products for recreational outdoor use since W.C. Coleman started selling gasoline-powered lanterns in 1900. It holds heat well, so I'm guessing it's insulated enough to keep your drinks cold.
Ryan Lym
The only problem I have with it is that the latch is angled in such a way that it can be very hard to open.

If you are looking for a basic cooler this size, I think this would be a good choice.

I am always looking for coolers with excellent build quality and that can maintain ice for longer periods of time. I recently got into "5 day" and "6 day" coolers. Now that I tested a couple, I have a basis for comparison in regards to performance to the "traditional" coolers. This is a review of the Coleman 48 Quart Chest Cooler.

When packing coolers, pre-chilled drinks and cubed ice are used. I do not use blocks of ice, which do maintain much longer than cubed ice. I had this cooler for about seven years. This cooler kept its contents ice cold for approximately 24 hours. This is disappointing considering the extra trips to purchase more ice when using the cooler for more than a day.

However, within the seven-year period of ownership, the cooler has maintained itself very well. Nothing has broke on this cooler, there are no leaks from the drainage spout, and the cooler does not appear to be degrading. The bottom line is that the build quality, with the exception of the lack of insulation, appears to be very good.

Overall, the Coleman 48 Quart Chest Cooler has good build quality but significantly underperforms today's "5 day" coolers on the market. The Igloo MaxCold 40 Quart Wheeled Cooler and Coleman Ultimate Xtreme 50 Quart Wheeled Cooler easily outperformed this cooler in their respective tests, keeping ice for an average of 72 hours. This cooler is rated a 3.0 out of 5.0 due to its significant underperformance in maintaining its contents ice cold.

Let me start off with the caveat that I purchased this cooler solely for use in homebrewing. This review does not pertain to the product's ability to keep food and beverages cool under ice. Removing the drain plug and replacing it with the necessary plumbing parts was accomplished easily enough. The handles come in handy when lifting the cooler up on the to counter to drain after mashing and sparging. The only complaint I have its ability to keep the mash at the proper temperature. The lid, by itself, will not stay closed with the hot water and grains inside. Steam easily seeps out the seams of the lid, causing an unacceptable drop in mash temperatures. However, simply placing a moderately heavy object on top creates a better seal that results in significantly less heat loss. Overall, with a bit of modification, this cooler can make a great mash tun for 5 gallon batches of all-grain beer.

I have had this cooler for years and love it. It is sturdy and the fold-out handles are great (they are not just molded part of the cooler). The spout on the side is nice for draining water that once was ice. It is plenty big too, a couple cases of cans plus food on top make it easy to pack for a whole weekend.

I ordered this cooler to keep sodas cold for my teenager's birthday party. Put in 24 cans of soda and half a dozen water bottles (all room-temperature) with 16 lbs. of ice, and they were chilled very quickly, in time for the party. 18 hours later, there is still plenty of ice floating in there with the few remaining cans. I'm very impressed at how well the cooler has kept things cold all this time!

We bought this to match our red and white coca cola theme travel trailer. It's a great color, but of course, who cares if it doesn't work, right? Well, it did the job, it kept the food cold and 3 days later, half the ice in the bag was still ice.. I wouldn't say it's going to keep your food cold for a week without adding more ice, but what cooler does?

We could not get the thing open when we received it. It took some prying and we thought it was defective.. We eventually realized it has great suction, which helps to keep the food cold. We're older, (late 50's and 60's), so for us, we had to stand behind the cooler and pull the lid up from behind.. It annoyed us at first, but the more we used it, the easier it was to open it.

But all in all, it did a good job on a recent camping trip and we're glad we purchased it.

I just loaded up my Coleman 48 Quart cooler for a run to the beach and was reminded of how great this item really has been over a ten year period. I've used it for camping trips, class reunion picnics, fishing trips, as storage when our refrigerator died and more!

A great size at 48 quarts with sturdy handles and a lightweight design, the cooler can be loaded it up with drinks and a picnic for 8 with no problem. After all this time it doesn't leak and keeps things cold for 24-48 hours; depending upon how many times I lift the lid.

If you care for your Coleman 48 Quart Cooler: don't drag it (lift or carry them instead), clean it out after each use (no food spoilage or fish left to rot in them), store in a place that doesn't get direct sunlight or have extreme changes in temperature (breaks down the plastic), and dry it prior to storage, you should get years of dependable use from this cooler.

This is an iconic cooler. Mine is going on 25 years with me, and the design hasn't changed. It takes a beating. The handles are very durable, too. The plastic hinges broke years ago, which is an inconvenience. I just bought a pair of 2" zinc-coated hinges at the hardware store, filled the old holes with epoxy, screwed the new hinges into the cooler, and we're good to go again. I love that the walls inside are straight, not slanted like so many coolers. Helps when packing. Things stack better. Insulation is not as thick as newer coolers. No wheels. The drain is banged up, but still holds the water in. Relegated more to patio parties and weekend camping trips, but it still gets the job done. I would not buy this today as a portable cooler, as wheels make all the difference when hiking to a campsite or to a lawn concert or to a fireworks show. For a patio cooler that doesn't need to keep ice frozen for days, this one is hard to beat. I may even build a cart for this cooler for patio parties. Enclose it all in cedar and raise it up to about 30". Put the cart on wheels. Should last another 25 years.
