4.0 out of 5 stars Good cooler, just be smart
I've had great luck with this cooler for both camping and backyard parties. With any cooler you are going to have problems if you keep opening and closing the lid all the time. It doesn't matter how much insulation it has. It has kept beer cold in my garage (at about 75-80) for 5 days, at the end of five days the ice that had been in there was mostly water, but very cold...

2.0 out of 5 stars underchilled and underwhelmed
I debated long and hard over buying this cooler for an upcoming annual trip, where we share a house at the beach with friends, and always run out of fridge and freezer space. Most of the reviews I read were decent, so I took a chance. We started off with it packed with a combination of ice, frozen foods, and previously chilled foods and beverages. I've had great luck with this cooler for both camping and backyard parties. With any cooler you are going to have problems if you keep opening and closing the lid all the time. It doesn't matter how much insulation it has. It has kept beer cold in my garage (at about 75-80) for 5 days, at the end of five days the ice that had been in there was mostly water, but very cold water and its kept Boca Burgers frozen while camping for a 3 day weekend. I wouldn't depend on it to keep milk good while camping for a week, but that isn't going to be possible with any cooler I know of. Much better at keeping things cold than the cheapie coolers, but you just have to be realistic about what a cooler can do and plan accordingly.

I purchased the Coleman 36 Quart Xtreme cooler expressly for keeping ice. I saw the claim that it kept ice for five days at 90 degrees. It's actually pretty close if you keep the cooler full of ice (which I do). I like it because it is large enough for my needs but not huge and hard to carry. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this purchase

I've used this cooler on a 7-day sailing kayak-camping trip along coastal everglades here in S Florida. I'm always careful to keep any cooler in the shade as much as possible, and I open it as little as possible. The cooler still had ice (in 2-l bottles) remaining at the end of the trip. It was never 90 deg, but I was satisfied with the cooler. I gave it 4-stars because you could always ask for more.

The person who complained about the drink holders being cold ought to stick foam in those openings if they are not going to use them. Others might love a cooled drink holder for a coke at 90 deg.

4.0 out of 5 stars Coleman Xtreme 36qt Cooler, July 7, 2009
This cooler works very well. However, it looks bigger from the outside as the extra wall for insulation takes up room on the inside. Overall, very pleased with purchase and holds ice as it claims.

We got this for summer cookouts, but being that it was December we put a bucketful of snow in it as a joke. We left it in the dining room and forgot about the snow for almost a week- when we opened it up, it still had chunks of ice floating in the incredibly cold water! We've since used it for the cookouts and its performed beautifully, keeping everything crisply cold!

Fantastic cooler that keeps the ice frozen for almost 6 days. Very roomy and it has a pour spout to drain off melted water or for cleaning.

By the time we reached out destination (an 8 hour drive), we had mostly water and partially thawed foods. It was a warm day, but it was in an air conditioned car with the exception of a short ferry ride. At our vacation place, we used it as a second fridge, with similar results. How anyone gets more than a day or so out of it is beyond me...and it certainly didn't perform as advertised! The trade of in cooler space for additional "Xtreme" insulation is a bad deal, in our book. Given the givens, we'd have just used our old cooler and added a few groceries!

5.0 out of 5 stars best 36qt. cooler ever made., August 16, 2009

I bought one of these about five years ago, and buying a replacement here cause as always, Amazon is the cheapest. This particular size cooler is perfect for a canoe, the low height is right at the center thwart of most canoes. The one I had finally got a crack in it after five years of hard use, about 100 days/yr. in the South Florida marine world. It had a GPS mount screwed to the lid and seat belt hinges. This cooler will, no bs, keep a case of beer and two paddlers happy, sippin' on cold ones for three days in 90 degree heat. You get the five days ice deal on winter trips on the Suwannee. It is definitely a cut above the others at a similar price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not do as it says, July 4, 2006
My family was going on a camping trip and figured this would be perfect as the ice would last five days and we would not have to worry. So we spent the extra money only to be disappointed. Not only did this product not live up to its word, the ice melted after only five or six hours. We hardly opened the cooler. Don't waste you money. We tried refilling the cooler again only to have the same thing happen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps ice!, July 10, 2011

We bought this cooler just to hold ice for pina coladas, etc., for on the boat. This kept ice for 2 days in mid 80s sunny weather. At the end of the second day, my beer cooler needed more ice, so I dumped the still hard ice out of this and into it . I don't think it would of had any problem holding firm ice for 3 or 4 days. As to the hinge issue that I've read about, this cooler has the exact same hinge as my Xtreme 70 quart cooler. I've owned that one for over a year and it's been well used with no issues at all, including hinge issues. I'm expecting great service out of both of these coolers.
