1.0 out of 5 stars Not as advertised BEWARE
I received this item and it is not what is advertised. The box has a label affixed to the box stating it is 425F499G but it is not the 21,000 BTU model advertised it is a 14,000 BTU model. My invoice matches the label. BEWARE you will not get what is advertised here. Very disappointed.

It is EXACTLY the same as the new model. It has never needed a repair. I just clean it after each camping trip. Coleman fuel is inexpensive and easily found in any part of the US and a gallon of fuel lasts me practically two years. The stove fits perfectly inside a 16 gal rubbermaid container with all of my other cooking gear (including pans). I absolutely recomend this stove. You don't need one of those fancy complicated other stoves. The basic Coleman stove is a workhorse that doesn't break down.

5.0 out of 5 stars unchanged in more than 50 years, April 14, 2009

This 425 2-burner Coleman stove has remained (relatively) unchanged in more than 50 years. This stove is simple, mechanically bombproof, and offers features unmatched by today's assortment of higher-priced, more 'convenient' stoves. For example, the 425 may be found nearly everywhere and shares rarely needed replacement parts across the product line. Tanks, valves, and generators are nearly interchangeable. The stove is easy to clean, spacious, and offers two burners: the main with a higher output, and a secondary, controlled by a simple turn key on the left-hand side of the stove case for simmering. This means that Iron Chef-wannabes can easily cook multiple entrees or multi-course meals on the camp table. The case offers a built-in windscreen. The tank is suspended by two tabs, although you can pin the tank if desired. The pump uses the ubiquitous Coleman pump assembly (although more recently this assembly uses a plastic washer). This stove will last a lifetime and you will not be disappointed. It is one of the most classic stove designs in history.

Still the Best. You always know how much fuel you have left and never have to worry about a leaky tank.

5.0 out of 5 stars White Gas way more economical than propane, March 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Coleman 425F499G 2 Burner Compact Gas Stove (Sports)
The main motivation for me to buy this stove was to not have to worry about continually buying and safely dispose of propane canisters.

Pros

1) Walmart sells white gas for $9 a gallon - and it lasted me three weeks of cooking two meals a day on a road trip.

2) The wind breaks work really well (most of the time).

3) The flame is really hot (you even cook stir fry on this stove).

4) Construction is sturdy and simple.

Cons

1) Having to pump and prime the stove is a little more complicated than a propane stove - but once you've done it a few times it is pretty easy.

2) Be sure to have a small funnel when pouring in the white gas - the hole in the gas tank is really small and it easy to make a mess.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rugged Portable Two-Burner Camp Stove, February 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Coleman 425F499G 2 Burner Compact Gas Stove (Sports)
I purchased this for a trip to Glacier National Park and for other camping adventures. It folds down to a very packable size. The fuel container takes white gas, available at all camping stores. It starts easily and burns hot - both burners, but particularly the primary burner. There is enough stove-top space for a frying pan and a smaller kettle for sides. I have owned two of these units, and am happy with both. My current stove has a slight problem, in that the fuel container does not fit snugly in the cut-outs. I will need to do some bending of the inserts to get it to stay in place (thus the 4-star rating). There are two side wind shields that help contain the heat from the burners under the grill area.

After each use, purge the fuel container of excess pressure to make the gaskets last longer. Periodically oil the plunger for years of trouble-free use.

My last unit lasted over 25 years. This one has quality improvements in the fuel container and the burners, so I expect it to perform better than the last, and hopefully last just as long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canning Peaches on the Patio with My Coleman Stove, June 30, 2009

With my kitchen cooktop broken and repairs stalled, I bought this Coleman stove (made in the US), hoping to use it for canning fruit this summer. It worked great! I set up the canning operation on the patio, with an electric hotplate for prepping the fruit and syrup, put the canner over the larger Coleman burner, and processed seven pints of apricots and plums. There was plenty of room for the canner. It had to be set a bit off center of the larger burner, but it felt stable; I would have had to work at tipping everything over. You could have put a small pot on the secondary burner at the same time, but it would have been a bit crowded.

I had to wait a while for the water to come to a full boil, but I don't think it took any longer than it took in my kitchen last summer.

The unit seems very sturdy and well put together. The instructions are clear and well illustrated with photos. I did go back to the store where I purchased it for a demonstration of pumping up the pressure in the tank, but that was probably an excess of caution on my part as I've never used any camp stove before. The instructions give each step in English, French, and Spanish, which got confusing. I plan to highlight the English passages for future use.

Overall I am very happy with this Coleman stove. (And as a bonus, it reminds me of camping with my folks when I was a kid.)

5.0 out of 5 stars You can't beat this stove, December 15, 2008
By
This review is from: Coleman 425F499G 2 Burner Compact Gas Stove (Sports)
My 2 burner Coleman Dual Fuel stove is one that my father bought when I was a kid to take camping in our pop up. I remember many meals prepared on it back then. I stopped camping for about 25 years, and just recently decided to start camping again with my family. I knew the Coleman would have to come with us.

So, I got my Dad's old Coleman stove and put a little Coleman fuel in it, pumped it up and it still runs like a champ. This is one piece of camping equipment that is nearly indestructible if you take any care of it at all. I know this stove sat unused for at least 20 years and probably a good bit longer.

As stated by others, not backpacking equipment, but perfect for rv'ing and car camping.

This is one of the few products made by any company that lives up to its reputation and actually exceeds it by a fair margin. You really can't go wrong with this little stove. Easy to use, easy to transport and it will outlast you most likely. It's something that can be handed down to your kids (or even grandkids) someday.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product...Damaged slightly in shipping, September 5, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Coleman 425F499G 2 Burner Compact Gas Stove (Sports)
As with the other reviewers, you can't beat this item for the price, reliability, and ease of use. This is the same model that my parents used to take me camping as a kid 30 years ago. They tried to improve on it with newer models burning different fuels, etc, but the original is the best. Can get Camp(Coleman) fuel at Dick's, Walmart, or Kmart and is cheap. Stove is simple and easy to use. Advertised to boil a QT of water in 4 minutes and it actually only took 4:15 when I timed it. Mine was banged up slightly in shipping, but anyone who has used one knows that it is irrelevant because it will take a beating camping and still work fine. Minus 1 star for shipping damage not product, product is great. And if you're debating between this model and the one that burns propane; just know the propane tanks last only an hour, cost more, and are pressurized so possibly more danger. 1 Tank of Coleman Fuel lasts about 4 hours and much cheaper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still #1, April 19, 2007
This review is from: Coleman 425F499G 2 Burner Compact Gas Stove (Sports)
Come on, was there ever any doubt? This is the stove that took America camping in the first place. The newer Miltie fuel versions are nice, but this is still old reliable. Mine is a third generation hand me down, and I can still get parts for it. The best part is that IT HAS NEVER NEEDED REPAIR EVER!

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll pass this thing down to your children..., May 12, 2011

Mine had its 30th birthday a couple years ago, and it works like a new. My father had three of these (one I suspect from the 60s) so he gave me one several years ago. It had been sitting in sheds and garages for 20 or so years and I assumed I needed to replace o-rings at least. Nope, the thing pressurized and fired up like it was new after nearly two decades of storage. I've used it many times since on every family camping trip or offroad picnic outing. It is a dead simple design and built to last. I don't doubt that what my father gave me might very well be used by my kids one day. This is really one of those "they don't make them like they used to" stories...only in this case they still do.
