I will be camping for a 7 day music festival next month and I was worried about how I will stay connected. I look at buying portable cell charges, solar chargers, but this one seemed to be the best option. All I gotta do is stock up on D batteries. I ordered the item and tested it out and it seems to work perfectly!! If you camp often or attend annual music festivals, this is a must!

Edit: 7/3/2013

During my test run of the product ,everything worked fine. I put fresh batteries in and was set to go on my camping trip. However, when I was ready to use it in the field, it did NOT work, even after switching the A and B switches. It would appear to be charging until I would come back 4 hours later and the battery percentage had actually gone down instead of up. I am a loyal Coleman customer, but this item did not live up to their usual standards. It really is too bad I already threw away the packaging, because now I can't even ask for a refund! Very disappointed.

The best part about this portable energy pack is that it can be powered with replaceable four D batteries. The rechargable accessory unit might be useful for a short period, but it is of no use if household power stays out for an extended period, whereas D batteries can be replaced as often as necessary. This unit recharged my iPhone (since I didn't want to rely on my car for several days) but disappointed it will not recharge a laptop.

The pictures of the Energy Pack make it look bigger than it really is. Imagine two soda cans placed side-by-side. That's about the length and height of it. Width is a little wider than a single soda can. It almost looks like a giant computer mouse.

The Energy Pack takes four D batteries so it is a bit heavy. The batteries slide into a cartridge which slides into the Energy Pack. Loading the batteries was a slight hassle since the cartridge isn't clearly marked with battery position indicators that tell which way the batteries should be inserted -- positive side up or down. The instruction sheet showed the correct positions.

Using the Energy Pack is a breeze. You plug in a USB cable, connect the other end to your device, then flick the power button on the Energy Pack from 'off' to 'A' or 'B'. That's it. The Energy Pack starts charging your device.

I'm still not sure about the difference between A and B. It appears the Energy Pack splits the available power between A and B. If your device doesn't completely recharge from A, the manual says flip to B and continue charging.

There is a DC 5V output port on the Energy Pack but a cable for it is NOT included.

On the bottom of the Energy Pack is a convenient storage compartment. It's big enough for a small cable or a series of adapters/plugs.

Finally, Coleman offers a rechargeable battery for this Energy Pack. Buying it will save on the cost of D batteries.

Am very happy with the Coleman Energy Pack and carry it with me out into the field.

Nice for power outages and camping trips.
Does not charge the batteries for other tools within the Coleman rechargeable line (I didn't realize that...).
I have charged iPhones and Blackberry's multiple times without recharging.

Coleman XPS 4D Energy Pack

Pro: Can charge smartphone, GPS, and mp3; sturdy; stylish looking; easy Manual Switch for charging

Cons: Huge; No automatic charging switch; Needs 4 D batteries or Coleman CPX6V Rechargeable battery

I bought this Coleman XPS 4D Energy Pack at kmart for [...] which is stylish and cheap... sort of, so I bought some more. Coleman XPS 4D Energy pack is huge as bathroom tissue roll, so it is not very portable... I mean it would not fit into my pants' pockets, so I have to use a backpack to store it. I can use it during traveling as long as I bring my backpack with me.

Coleman XPS 4D Energy Pack requires 4 D type batteries or Coleman CPX6V Rechargeable battery.... Additional cost.. such a drag, since I have to drag myself to the store to buy some batteries.

I put the batteries in the Coleman XPS 4D Energy Pack without too much hassle. With batteries on, the charger weigh 3 pounds. It has A or B switch.. no clue why it has two switches. Then again I never read the manual. It does not matter to me, because both of them works just fine. I hit the switch to "A" and recharge my smartphone, while I use my smartphone for at least 3 hours worth of facebooking, heavily surfing internet, and playing games apps. As a result, it took 5 hours of recharging to have my smartphone fully charged. Coleman 4D XPS portable energy pack still had enough energy to fully recharge my smartphone one more times. I also noticed when I used a fully charged Coleman CPX6V Rechargeable battery as a power source, it can only recharge my smartphone fully charge once and the second time about 17% during heavy usage.

Coleman XPS 4D Energy Pack can recharge my other devices such as GPS and mp3 as long as there is USB cable.
