5.0 out of 5 stars Great lightweight stove. Coleman should keep it up!
I purchased a Coleman Exponent F1 Ultralight stove this past spring in preparation for a trip to the Cascades in Oregon. I have owned a liquid fuel stove for years (MSR Whisperlite purchased in approx 1992), and have loved it, but as I am getting older, I have been wanting to trim my pack weight down. I have found the following advantages to the F1 Ultralight.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's a fine stove, however there's no "push-button electronic ignition for matchless lighting"
This is a good compact stove that uses the Propane/Butane mix fuel cans. However there is no "push-button electronic ignition for matchless lighting"! contrary to the product description. Should have known it's too good to be true.

#1. Easy to use. Simply unscrew the burner head, open the pan supports, screw the burner head back down, screw stove onto canister, light match, twist valve, and you are cooking with gas.
#2. No priming. The liquid fuel stoves required priming, and pumping, which made them harder to use than I would have expected. With this stove, you simply turn the valve and light. No waiting for the generator to heat up.
#3. Very light weight. The stove assembly itself weighs less than just the small fuel bottle for my liquid fuel stove alone. This thing is a feather on the back.
The disadvantages are there as well.
#1. Canister stoves rely on the low boiling point of the fuel to force fuel vapor up and out of the canister, and at temps close to, or below the boiling point, which is close to 0 fahrenheit, the stove simply will not work. For me, where and when I camp, this is not an issue.
#2. Fuel cannot be used as an emergency fire starter.
#3. Fuel is EXPENSIVE compared to white gas, or unleaded gasoline.
The owners manual claims this stove only works with Coleman Brand canisters, but I have found that any threaded canister of 70/30 Butane / Propane blend works. I have used Brunton, Coleman, MSR, and some odd black Canister I bought at a gas station in Oregon with it, all with excellent results..
Compared with other canister stoves such as the MSR Pocket Rocket, Brunton Optimus Crux, Snow Peak Giga Power Stove, or Primus Yellowstone Techno Trail, the Coleman Exponent F1 Ultralight had the design that made the most sense to me, sported the lowest weight (.4oz lower than its nearest competitor), and from what I was able to determine in impromptu in store testing, appeared to have the best pot stability of the group, with pot supports that spread out nice and wide. One tidbit about this however is... The Evernew 1.3L Titanium cookpot, is oddly shaped on the bottom, and sits and a slightly odd angle on the F1. I have tried many other pots and this is the only one I have a problem with. The issue is whith the oddly dimpled bottom of the Evernew pot, and NOT with the Coleman stove...
SUMMARY. If you camp where the temps aren't freezing, low weight, ease of use are important, and cost of fuel is unimportant, then this is the stove for you. However you must carry some other sort of emergency fire starter in lieu of having stove gas to start wet wood. If however the cost of fuel is going to be a factor for you, or you are going to go mountain climbing, or whatever, you will want to bypass any canister stove at all, and just go with a gasoline model instead. The Coleman F1 Ultralight is the lightest of the group of stoves I had considered, had the best design, and came in at a price point that I liked. For the majority of backpackers out there, I would say this would be the best stove for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great super lightweight stove, July 5, 2008

I bought this stove a few weeks ago for a backpacking trip in the California Sierras. We used the stove twice a day and it worked great (one match to light every time even in windy conditions). The stove is unbelievably light and fits in a tiny sack which can easily be stored inside pots and pans for protection. It is also surprisingly stable considering its' size. The manual says the stove is compatible only with Coleman propane/butane canisters but it will work with any propane/butane canister. I used the MSR brand. I used one 4 oz. cannister in four days (7 meals plus boiling water for tea, hot chocolate). In summary, this is a great product for a great price. Similar stoves I looked at were heavier and twice the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Stove, September 20, 2007
By
I have had the F1 Ultralight for over 4 years and can say that it's the best I've seen. It puts out more heat then the MSR PocketRocket, packs down smaller, is lighter... and costs less. Of course, with this stove, you are limited to the Isobutane/Propane type fuel canisters, so if you are planning to go someplace where those aren't available, this isn't the stove for you, but otherwise, it's a fantastic investment. I do most of my backpacking in the Sierra's and have never had any problems with it- the design is very clean.

I just got one. It is very light, small enough to fit into my cooking system when dissembled. Great for light packing. Nice pouch for protection. But unlike the Amazon product description, there is NO push-button ingniter. (Please correct the wrong description!) You need a match for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little stove, May 27, 2009
This review is from: Coleman Exponent F1 Ultralight Stove (Sports)
Great stove, glad I got it! My scale actually weighs it at 2.5 oz (specs state 2.7 oz), and the nice little reflective sack (easy to find in the dark) it comes with weighs 0.25 oz. Boil time seems faster than the 3 min 40 sec listed, I'd estimate on the calm days it took about 2.5 minutes to boil a liter in my broad-based Primus teapot, and on a windy/rainy day closer to 3.5 minutes. Was stable with the teapot on even on windy days. Can't use with a reflective wind-breaker due to it having a plastic part, but worked well with a log wind-break. Fast set-up and take down, fits inside my teapot, lights on the first try every time, used less fuel than I planned on, and the Coleman fuel canisters are self-sealing with no risk of leaking in your pack. I'd highly recommend this to a friend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding stove!, April 17, 2008

I took this little guy out for its first run last weekend and was truly impressed with it. The package is ultra light, the arms are wide and secure, and it gets very hot very fast. I would absolutly recommend this for any backpacker.
I used it with an MSR fuel canister, no problems what-so-ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little workhorse!, October 16, 2009

I love this stove! I originally started backpacking and car camping with a liquid alcohol stove, then converted to a Primus cannister trail stove. I loved it, but due to my age and back, I decided to replace all my old heavy gear with newer, lightweight items. Price and weight were my two concerns. I researched Snowpeak, Brunton, and Primus, and found the price was more than the Coleman F1, and the other stoves had from 8,000 to 11,000 BTUs. This stove has 16,400 BTUs and weighs only 2.7 oz. I ordered from Amazon, and am so glad I did! Two cups of water for my Lipton pasta reach a rolling boil in under two minutes, then I reduce the flame to a light simmer for a few more minutes. Boil time for 1 liter is about three minutes. This stove performs amazingly, easy to use, great flame adjustment, little boil time, and packs down to a 2 inch pouch. What more could a camper want?

The stove worked perfectly. Very compact and lightweight. Fits in my titanium cup! The only issue was that I could not see the flame in daylight but I could definitely hear the fuel being burned. Nonetheless, I was able to boil a couple of cups of water in a matter of minutes!
