Lightweight, compact and powerful, the Coleman 4AA Pack-Away Lantern is a great choice for backpackers, trekkers and anyone who wants a high-performance light in a small package. Weighing just 8.3 ounces with the included four AA batteries, the Pack-Away Lantern features a clever telescoping design. Closed, it's not much larger than a deck of cards -- 3.2" x 1.5" x 2.6" -- so it's easy to pack and transport. It opens to a height of 4.875", providing an uncommonly bright LED illumination. The Cree XLamp XR-E LED produces 95 lumens of bright light, amplified by a highly-efficient conical reflector. The 4AA Pack-Away Lantern runs for approximately 12 hours on low and 6 hours on high. The Lantern also features an emergency strobe light, which will run for up to 75 hours on a fresh set of batteries. The lantern uses a simple push-button control, large enough to find and use even when wearing gloves or mittens. Automatic shutoff ensures that the light goes out when the lantern is closed, saving batteries and preventing accidental operation while in a pack. A bail handle can be flipped up to hang the lantern in a tent or from a limb; the handle conveniently snaps to a closed position for storage. Carabiner clip included. Color: orange.

I was at my local outdoors supplier (Sports Basement) when I saw this little unit among six or seven other competing brands. Of all the battery powered lanterns big and small, this one out shined them all!!! Even the D cell powered ones! Yes, I know that sounds exaggerated, but no. Well ok, I don't know how old the batteries were in the others on display, but I turned them all on one at a time to compare. I couldn't spend the money on it then and when I went back a few weeks later, they were all gone. I went to REI to see if they had them, but no. :( Thankfully Amazon has them. I'll probably buy a spare just in case they stop carrying them because I really like this lantern!

Basically, if you want a small, light weight, relatively powerful battery powered lantern, you wouldn't be making a bad choice with this one. This really is a GREAT little lantern!

When our Coleman florescent bit the dust we were looking for something really small and powerful. This light is really nice, small and two brightness settings make this thing perfect for our little popup we pull with our motorcycle. The LED seems to be pretty frugal with the batteries although we only use it when necessary and turn it off. It has blinking light setting and I'm not sure what that is suppose to do. Seems rugged.
