Solid Shovel/Pick,

It just arrived and while other reviewers complain it's too small, I have to ask, too small for what? You're not going to dig a drainage ditch with this shovel, that's true, but it's the right size for a backpacking shovel, which is its main purpose. It folds up nicely and is very compact in the carrying case. Slightly weighty due to the steel, but I expect it will be rather durable as well. It does claim it can be used as a saw, but I don't think the teeth are sharp enough for that.

Smaller than expected,

It is much smaller than I expected, but it is of very good quality. I have actually found the the belt size package is quite useful. If you want a small camp/hiking shovel this is a great package. If you are looking for something to do a larger job, look elsewhere.

Somewhat small, but does the job.,

Looking at the picture you would think that it is somewhat of a medium sized to large sized shovel. This is not the case - the shovel "head" is very small (about the size of a grown mans hand). It does do the job though and is easy to store.

Horrible quality,

The reason I give this 2 stars is because it's good for a couple of uses, but the pieces wear down and the shovel just becomes a giant spoon after multiple uses. I bought a Gerber folding shovel for 20.00 plus shipping and it's held up great, I would suggest the Gerber as a long term camping tool.

What I'd like to find is something like the Army surplus entrenching tool I kept in my car many years ago, but this tool is a fairly satisfactory alternative. It's about half the size of the real thing so you can't go crazy with it, but considering its size (and the fact that it breaks down to a very handy size for storage) it is quite sturdy and well worth the price. I bought two, one for my car, one for my wife's.

It gets the job done, but there are definitely better shovels out there. This one cannot lock with any angle in it and loosens itself during sustained use.

works good if you fold the blade all the way out and use it as a shovel, otherwise it wiggles loose after some use. The carry pouch leaves a lot to be desired and it's a tad too heavy for my liking.

Great for digging potty holes!,

As any camper knows, you need to dig a pretty deep hole when you're camping, or else the smell will eventually drive you away from your site. This shovel didn't seem like it would be up to the task, but it actually worked like a champ. I was able to get 8 inches deep, which is pretty good as far as potty holes go. 8 inches is alot! Plus it folds down and it's easy to store. The only thing I didn't like is that the pick part broke off when I was using it to open a can.

The description states that this shovel is 23" long, folding into 10".
The box this product comes in is 6 1/2" long, and the longest opened shovel measures 16". Customer service said they will correct the item description.

Leave No Trace!,

You cannot be a responsible backpacker and not have a shovel or pick to bury your personal waste. This device weights a little more than just one pound and is easily cleaned and even fits into its own lightweight bag. To be responsible, whenever backpacking, one should always dig a privy pit at least a foot deep and preferably deeper. Trying to use sticks or rocks to dig is silly. This is too lightweight and too handy to not bring on any trip. It is also really handy for digging trenches around your tent when you expect rain. The pick is especially handy in heavy and hard-packed soils. Clean up after yourself! Leave no trace!
