9 of 9 people found the following review helpful By Nikica Gilic on September 20, 2008
Format: Audio CD
In first two tracks Hawkins is joined by the ever-swinging Oscar Peterson trio, Ben Webster (who takes back seat on second track) and drummer Alvin Stoller, a nice group of hard swingers who nevertheless show more of their mellow side than some might expect...

The rest of the album is equally rewarding; the Hawk stretches his wings working with Roy Eldridge (tp), Hank Jones (p), George Duvivier (b) and Mickey Sheen (dm) - the drummer is the only musician on the album I don't think I've heard before; Hank Jones and Duvivier show the swinging ellegance I've heard from them before...

In his liner notes Nat Hentoff says something interesting and quite significant - when playing with Hawk, Eldridge doesn't feel the urge to light up the proceedings with a fierce solo (pyrotechnical hysteria is something often mentioned by Roy's detractors...). Hawkins' playing is so full of energy even in slower tempoes that Eldridge also takes it down a notch and constructs his solos with less high register explorations...

This, at first glance quite laid back album (Hawk relaxes, one might say) is therefore a great example of the jazz giants at the hight of their power, playing subtly and intelligently, toying with the jazz-idiom they helped to create (or that they joined with a lot of respect).

Format: Audio CD
This is one of the less essential releases from Fresh Sound because the original and its reissue are still available. "The High and Mighty Hawk" is a session not to be missed. Everything is right about this session--Hawk's playing, spot-on performance from his frontline partner (Buck Clayton), the non-stop swing from the flow of a rhythm section thinking as one--Hank Jones, Ray Brown, and Mickey Sheen. I have the original LP (beautiful audio) as well as the reissue, but it's good to know this one is available should I wear both out. (If you can get your hands on one track, make it "Bird of Prey Blues"--above all, listen to the soloing--2 spots--and constantly changing, always joyful accompaniment, supplied by Hank Jones. He's feeling it--and you will too.)

The pictured album--Hawk and Confreres--is not the finished studio product that The High and Mighty Hawk is. In fact, look on youtube for some of the numbers from the pictured album of this "two-fer" collection. Audio and precision are lacking, but there's spirit to go around. And if you look hard enough, you may discover the only instance--recorded on film--when Prez recorded with Hawk, even standing up to take him on in a series of 4-bar exchanges!
