World's greatest lantern, June 11, 2004
This review is from: Coleman Northstar Battery Family Size Lantern - 5359M701 (Misc.)
I bought the Coleman battery lantern before we went on a camping trip with my 6 year old daughter and her Y-Princess tribe. I liked the idea of a battery-powered lantern, as opposed to a propane or liquid fuel lantern, around little kids. It turns out that the Coleman battery lantern is the best lantern I've ever used. Most importantly, it throws a ton of bright white light - this is "hang the lantern on a tree branch and have enough light to pitch the tent, build the fire, cook dinner, etc" kind of light. In addition, the Coleman battery lantern lasts a lot longer than I expected on a set of batteries, turns right on, is easy to find in the dark (when you leave the night light feature on), is easy to carry... I could go on and on. Sure, 8 D cell batteries are expensive, but that's the only down side I can see. The benefits mentioned above, plus the huge benefit of safety around the kids, more than makes up for the additional expense, at least in my book.

Great light from an electric!, October 19, 2005
This review is from: Coleman Northstar Battery Family Size Lantern - 5359M701 (Misc.)
I love the light from my Coleman Dual-Fuel Lanturn, but I couldn't use it inside during the weeks-long power outtages after hurricaine Katrina. I wanted a lantern that would be as bright as my gas lantern, but safe for indoor use.
This lantern is bright enough to get the job done. And since it's electric, you have bright light at the twist of a knob. No fooling with matches and the surprising FOOM of sudden gas ignition.
I will admit the Coleman Northstar lantern still has the blueish color cast of fluorescent light, instead of the warm buttery glow of a gas lantern, but the light it casts off is like carying around a full, industrial-size fluorescent tube.
With this lamp I was able to set up my tent (and a few others), cook dinner, and light up the campsite after the bottled propane lamp burned out. I've only had it for one campout, but I was impressed with its performance, and so were my friends.

Lives up to the Coleman name, December 6, 2005
This review is from: Coleman Northstar Battery Family Size Lantern - 5359M701 (Misc.)
Works well, batteries last a long time, plenty of light.
I wouldn't want to live by this light every day, but in an emergency it is great.
The only problem I have is remembering to buy 8 D size batteries. I was looking for something that took less batteries, but most got bad reviews.
