About Coleman
More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark. In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

I bought this cooler for an Oct camping trip. Little did I know it was going to stick around in the 80-85's the entire 4 days we were camping! I had brought 2 coolers with us, this one and a beer cooler. The beer cooler was melted by day 2. This one still had ice. So we transferred all the beer into this one. I'm suprised everything fit. After multiple openings and closings, all the food was still cold and there was still ice in it when we left the site. I was impressed and will highly reccomend this product to anyone.

A large logo/sticker on the side of the chest says "5 Day Cooler", I have purchased some of these before and never....I say Never, has one held up like this one. The size is perfect for my boat, fits between two long couch seats. Easily maneuverable, sturdy handles, and great drain plug.

We filled up the cooler with drinks, 20ibs of ice and hit the water. Spent the day on the lake in the sun, loaded the boat and headed home. Placed the cooler in the bed of my truck under a black topper (it gets very hot under there) and six days later unloaded it to clean it out. I expected melted water, luke warm, but what I found was remaining ice! The drinks were still cold after 6 days, most of those days were in the lower 90's in Texas.

Overall a great cooler. I would suggest reinforcements for the wheels - I noticed one of mine were a little loose, but pushed it back in and seems ok for now. I do not buy a cooler to "baby" around, they definitely get used like a cooler should! I know this one will hold up well.

We purchased this cooler to replace a 13-year old 100qt. Coleman that didn't seem to keep ice for more than two days while warm weather camping. This one didn't do much better with the ice in this new one. The second time out, we even tried putting all the drinks in the fridge for a day prior to putting them in the cooler as suggested. At most, we got 3 days in 90 degree heat before it was all water. However, the wheeled design is VERY nice. I'd recommend this cooler, but if you're looking to keep ice for 5 days as advertised, this just doesn't work as well as Coleman would have you believe.

I just got back from a 5 day family camping trip and the original block of ice I left with is still not fully melted even tho two of those days hit 90 degrees and it was transported to and from in a very hot utility trailer.

To get these results, I put a 12 quart stainless steel stock pot filled with water plus 6 stainless steel water bottles filled with water into the freezer a week ahead of time and pre-chill the soda and favor frozen foods for initial packing and generally try to keep the cooler in the shade at all times and try to keep it full and not open it more often than necessary.

Part of me wishes it were better (better insulation, better hinges, better wheels, better draining, etc), however none of the higher quality coolers have wheels and they cost 3 times as much money. Tho Yeti says that they have one with wheels currently in design phase.

Coleman did have a cooler with the same outer dimensions with thicker insulation (the 82 Qt Ultimate XTreme), but you lost a good deal of space with the extra thickness and ice is usually not that far away wherever we camp. I suspect no one bought it, so they stopped making it.

The hinges will break, but you can get metal hinges to replace them (Stainless Steel Coleman Cooler Hinges & Screws - #6155-5741 from West Hardware Co). They have brought new life to my cooler. Using plastic hinges was a dumb decision on their part to save $2.

My handles have had no problems staying on so far. If they do come off, you can probably fashion one out of rope. The better coolers use rope.

The position and style of the drain seems to be a bad design, but I would guess that there are reasons for that. I just do not know what they are.

The hinges on this broke with the first use, so I contacted Amazon, and return was arranged quickly. Happy with Amazon. Not Coleman.

I purchased this cooler in December 2006. I have used it mostly for large family events. There are usually beverages left over, so I keep the cooler outside on the deck for about a week afterward until the beverages are gone. I have read some reviews which indicate that the cooler does not keep ice as long as advertised. I have left this cooler outside, often in direct sunlight, in the low 80s to low 90s for as long as a week. It consistently keeps ice for 5 days. Of course, much of the ice is melted, but there's still a large amount which is not melted. Even at 7 days, the beverages are still cold. The length of time it will keep ice obviously depends upon how often the lid is opened. Also, I have found that it is necessary to push the lid all the way down. It may not be noticeable to someone getting in the cooler, but if the lid is not pushed all the way down, it will be slightly open.

Regarding durability, it has been fine. No breaks, cracks or splits. I also have had no problem with the cooler leaking from the drain, as one reviewer had. Another reviewer wasn't pleased with the large handle, stating that it is too large to lift the cooler high enough while walking it. As you can see from the picture, there's also a smaller handle inside the larger handle which can be used if that is a concern.

In summary, it has been a very useful and reliable cooler for me. Other than the wheels being slighty worn after nearly 4 years of use, it still looks and performs like new. I recommend it.
