If you want a safe lantern, batteries are the way to go. This one, for battery life, and compact storage features is the best. Add to that a remote, it just doesn't get any better. There are two brightness settings, although there is no great difference here, it is not the main reason for buying this. It folds into itself thus protecting the lens and bulb, and makes it half the size, so takes up little space. A winner all around, true to the Coleman name.

Used this lantern on a recent camping trip and it made life a little easier for my wife and I. The remote is what makes all the difference. We kept this lantern inside the tent and used the remote to light the way prior to entering.

The light output is sufficient enough to read by. There are two output settings, but I couldn't tell the difference between the two.

We've only put about 8 total hours on the lantern so I can't report on the longevity but seems to be well built and could handle some abuse. All in all, I would buy another one if needed.

I am using my lantern indoors as a reading light. Plenty of brightness for that as you might expect for 8 D size batteries. My complaint with this product is it's flimsy design, particularly with the switch mechanism on the top of the lantern.

After a few short months the remote switch circuit stopped working. Not a total loss since it has a 2-position manual switch built into the top. But after 6 months of relatively infrequent use, the manual switch has broken - it just turns 360° now without clicking into any position. This renders the lantern unusable at this point since there is no way to turn it on!

Now I wish i had bought something simpler.

I love this lantern, it's great. Only issue is the first time I used it this weekend the switch broke, but i could still use the clicker. As long as they replace it for free then I'll be happy.

This lights up a campsite better than any battery-operated lantern I've ever seen. I wanted one of the LED models, but this was 25% off at Target, so we bought it. It puts out a ton of light, florescent so it's not "soft" light. Caveats: It is quite heavy, too heavy for a smaller child; and I would not hang it from my tent. It is also battery intensive, but since there seems no significant difference between "high" and "low," I'm satisfied with the batteries required for the amount of light you get out of them (lots!). I love that it travels protected in its own case. We had no problems or injuries in collapsing/extending the unit or putting the batteries in place. For the price, I'd do it again, but this looks well-enough made to last us quite a while. Very good price, very easy to operate, very sturdy - so it gets 5 stars despite the caveats.

I bought this light for my camp tent. I have to say that the light intensity and output is very good. The fact that it comes with a remote control also is very nice since you can actually turn on/off the light from outside the tent. The only drawback I can see of this light is that it is a bit heavy, but if you have a strong tent there should be no problem. As for what concerns the closing and opening mechanism, it is not true that it is dangerous in any way, if someone had any type of accident with it it's because it had to be a bit clumsy. It is perfectly safe to open and close and the best part it's that been electric you can feel safe in the tent from fire accidents.

Compact as top slides into base. Good construction. Nice even lighting with brightness settings. Handy remote on/off. Somewhat heavy with eight D Cell batteries. Cannot recharge batteries. I would recommend this lantern.

This little jewel puts out more then enough light.. Very easy to use and compact.. The remote is a very great feature.. Very durable.... Highly recommend...

I am very happy with this lantern. The remote works well and it puts out plenty of light to read by or play games with. Overall the construction is solid and the pack away feature is very nice.

I thought this lantern would be perfect for a dark basement staircase. The problem is the batteries are always dead when u need the lantern. I have replaced them 3 times always the same problem. It is useless to me.
