Nice Propane Lantern,

Used this for the first time this past weekend, so I've only had limited experience so far. (I'll update this review if I run into a problem later.) Some brief highlights:* The lantern works quite well. It puts out a good deal of light and is well constructed. *Like other reviewers, I am concerned about the possibility of cross threading the soft aluminum header in the lantern versus the propane tanks. When attached the propane, take your time and be careful not to over tighten. * I think it is well worth the money to buy the version with the hard case. It is a nice case, easy to put the lantern away and makes is great to pack. * Like any propane product, there is some propane "hiss" while it burns, but I didn't find it bothersome. Possibly I expected some, so wasn't surprised. * This lantern does NOT have a ignition built in,so you have to use a match or a small torch, but it was easy enough to light. Overall, a good lantern. We'll see how it holds up with time. The only reason for the 4stars instead of 5 is the issue with the soft aluminum threads. August 2010 Follow Up: Still using it and it is working great! We don't camp all that frequently, so I won't say we've given this a hard workout, but it gets used each summer and is always up for the task. Still strongly suggested.

Great light, but I wish I got the auto ignition.,

Picked this one up after that last camping trip where I found I had plenty of propane but all my lanterns run on batteries that were all dead. Decided that this was what I need to solve that problem, but the store didn't have the auto ignite model in stock. Plenty bright and easy to use, but I worry that I might break a mantle lighting with matches. The only reason for the four stars is because in my opinion you should opt for the same lantern with auto ignite. Don't get me wrong, this is still a great lamp.

The knob to adjust the brightness is loose and connot be tightened. You cannot return to Amozon. It has to be sent to Coleman. Do yourself a favor and spend more money for a better one or even go to Wal Mart and see what you are buying.

Love it!!!,

Just back from my son's first cub scout camp out and this lantern was flawless. I highly recommend it and would love to own a second. Ran on high for 8 hours and still had some left when we shut it down. I took it to the pack leaders dinner on Saturday night and hung it from their pavillion beam and it lit the whole surrounding area as the pack leader read stories to the scouts into the late evening hours. I cannot imagine any complaints about this product. Will order as second soon!

Better than Battery,
By
This review is from: 2 - Mantle Propane Lantern withcase (Sports)
I have owned two of the Coleman battery powered lanterns. After a season the battery powered lanterns do not run as long as they used to. I bought the propane lantern to try it out. It is great because it runs for hours (greater than 5 depending on the light setting) on one propane bottle which can run about $3.00 max. For cost of D batteries needed for my old lanterns the propane is cheaper. The propane lantern has a adjustable light setting. When turned to the highest setting it is extremely bright. The battery powered lantern's highest setting is close to the propane's mid setting. The last perk is that the bugs that are attracted by the light are killed by the heat and the flame of the propane torch. You do need to dump the bug bodies out of the lantern before packing it away. We kept the lantern about 8 feet away from us which gave us plenty of light. We did not see many bugs because they were killed almost instantly. Cons: 1. Hiss noise from propane- but it becomes white noise after a half hour. 2. You cannot take it in your tent because it burns oxygen and could start a fire. Overall, you cannot go wrong buying this propane lantern. It will last longer, be brighter, and cost less than the battery powered lanterns.

The standard by which all other propane lanterns are measured,

This is your standard middle-of-the-road propane lantern. Two mantles, adjustable output, plastic case, plastic base with feet.It is nothing spectacular, but I give it 5 stars because it does exactly what it is supposed to do with no problems. It is as bright as you will ever need. One propane canister lasts around 8 hours. Mantles last forever if you don't disturb them. The case is a must. Anyone who has owned a propane lantern without a case is familiar with having to buy replacement globes all the time. The mantles can be lit by basically anything with a flame. A cigarette lighter does the job fine, as does a wad of lit pine needles or a twisted paper towel or a match or whatever. Lighting it is no problem whatsoever. The hiss is typical. The construction is tough.

Pros: Easy to light with long match, mantles stay functional for a good while, can be BRIIIIIGHT, or nice & dim, if you just need a small light, but don't want to burn a lot of propane. We ran our lantern for probably 9 hours over two nights, using varied brightnesses (dim for most of the time, to BRIGHT for about an hour and a half), and I still have about half a can of propane. With the carrying case, it is a heck of a deal.

You can depend on this product.,
This review is from: 2 - Mantle Propane Lantern withcase (Sports)
This is lantern is easy to use, easy to maintain, and throws plenty of light with respectable run time. Nosier and not quite as bright as a white gas lantern but the convenience and durability more than make up for it. If you take pride in good gear, this lantern won't let you down.I would also like to recommend buying an outdoor grill that uses the same propane tanks as this lantern. They cost about $3.99 in CA. Great combo. Keep the wind in your face and happy hunting.

Great light out put. Solidly built and well protected by the plastic case. Cartridges and mantles readily available. My only gripe is the noise, but that is to be expected.

I purchased this item for out Boy Scout troop and it works like a charm. It comes with a great hard plastic case and two mantles to begin with. The pop out legs are great for keeping it balanced on a table. The only thing that it doesn't have is a self light ignition, but for the price I am not complaining. Excellent Buy.
