5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING product!
I bought this for camping and have used it during major power failures (including a four-day outage from a hurricane) so it's been a lifesaver as well as a piece of fun sports equipment. The "towing" capacity makes it easy to move around even when fully loaded to save your back. HIGHLY RECOMMEND for campers, sports fishermen, and anyone else

4.0 out of 5 stars Coleman 6-Day 50 Quart Ultimate Xtreme Wheeled Cooler Review, September 20, 2009
By

This review is from: 50 Quart Ultimate Xtreme Wheeled Cooler (Sports)
I am always looking for coolers with excellent build quality and that can maintain ice for longer periods of time. I recently got into "5 day" and "6 day" coolers. This is a review of the Coleman 6-Day 50 Quart Ultimate Xtreme Cooler.

When packing coolers, pre-chilled drinks and cubed ice are used. I use cubed ice because it is convenient, but understand that blocked ice maintain much longer than cubed ice. When tested, the Coleman Ultimate Xtreme Cooler kept ice for 60 hours (2 and a half days). Again, I am mindful that without blocks of ice, I cannot expect a full 6-days of ice retention. The Ultimate Xtreme significantly outperformed the older Coleman 48 Quart Cooler that maintained ice for only 24 hours.

The build of the cooler appears to be good. Looking at the cooler, the lid and walls of the cooler appear extremely well insulated. The lid appears to align decently with the body of the cooler, though the front and center of the lid does not appear airtight. Also, the drainage outlet has no significant "locking" feel as my old Coleman 48 Quart did. I noticed that condensation formed along the drainage outlet of the cooler. This is likely due to less insulation around the outlet. Not a big deal, but an inconvenient one as my wood floor got wet during the testing period.

Something to consider about this cooler is the canal on the inside of the cooler that leads to the drainage outlet. The canal is helpful in allowing any water in the cooler to drain almost completely without the need to tip the cooler. However, when packing the cooler, the cans will not line up easily or nicely due to the concave build on the bottom of the cooler due to the canal. Some people will see it as a plus and some will see it as a minus, I am neutral on this. I would recommend taking a look at the inside of the cooler to get a better picture. However, as a previous review mentioned, it would have been nice for the drainage outlet to be on the opposite side of the cooler due to the towing handle was in the direct path of the draining water. In addition, the long handle is just a tad longer than the bottom of the cooler when at rest, which digs into the ground when you park the cooler. So if you are outside, the tip of the long handle will likely dig into the ground, dirtying your handle.

The insulation appears to be an impressive 2-inches. As a result, you definitely notice this in the weight of the cooler. The cooler is hefty, especially when packed with cans and ice. Thankfully, the wheels on the cooler make transporting it easier and appear to work really well.

Overall, the Coleman 6-Day 50 Quart Ultimate Xtreme Cooler has decent build quality and good performance. This cooler is rated a 4.0 out of 5.0, which could be improved if the lid was better aligned with an airtight closure in the front-center of the lid, a more secured drainage valve, improved position of the drainage valve with respect to the long handle, and a little better performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Cooler, But Drainage?????, July 27, 2008

We purchased the Coleman Xtreme 50 Qt. and it really DOES keep the ice for 5-6 days. Great addition to the boat! In general, we love it. But, why did Coleman put the petcock for the drain on the same end of the cooler as the long tow handle? If they had just put the drain at the opposite end, one could leave it open and allow it to drain naturally while being towed across parking lots, docks or picnic areas. As it is now, if you want to drain off surplus while it is standing still, you have to lift it by a short handle and bend over while it drains. When loaded, this guy IS heavy...kind of tough on us 'boomers'. Just a thought...Carol Johnson - Morganton, GA

5.0 out of 5 stars Cooler than my fridge, May 27, 2008
This review is from: 50 Quart Ultimate Xtreme Wheeled Cooler (Sports)
I bought unit to use on my boat. Packed with stuff and drinks & one frozen gallon of water (milk jug). No other ice.
Boated all day, cooler was in the sun, it was 85-90 degrees we used this cooler often. The next day I unpacked was preparing to clean this cooler. Ice was still ¾ solid, mustard and drinks were still ice cold.
Its amazing how cold stuff remains inside this cooler. Well worth the extra money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than most coolers!, September 8, 2008

This wheeled cooler has great ice keeping capabilities. On the downside, the wheels rub the sides of the cooler and make an annoying noise when you roll it around.

This cooler works great and as advertised. Love the teal color too. We went camping and used this cooler for 6 days without adding extra ice. On the 5th day all ice was gone, however the ice water kept everything very cool. The days got upto 95 degress. Going to buy another one, however it will be much bigger.

We had 3 coolers of which one was my Coleman Xtreme. The Coleman went head to head with a 5-day Igloo and a 5-day Rubbermaid and by an enormous margin, the Coleman lost. both 5-day coolers had plenty of ice cubes remaining to keep drinks cold even after 3 full days, whereas the Coleman was down to almost water after 24 hours. I was very disappointed. I'll likely move to an Igloo or Rubbermaid in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars good, but can be leaky, July 23, 2010

We purchased this in our quest for a "good, high quality cooler that we could use forever." obviously, the "Coleman" name is well known. after we bought it we realized 2 other friends had it. :) the only complaint i had was that when it's pretty full of water (ice melted after a weekend of camping but we wanted to keep the beer cold), it leaked while pulling it and again in the car. we didn't quite have the ice staying power of other reviews i've read, but it was a hot weekend, the cooler was opened frequently, and warm beverages were added to it. overall i'm satisfied with it, but i don't know i'd call it amazing.

on a side note, the first cooler we got we got out of the box, took the sticker off, and went to pull it and the handle came off. it wasn't an easy fix so we exchanged it through the amazon website-- who knew exchanges could be so easy! we had our new cooler two days later and didn't pay an extra dime! we just had to put it back in the box, print the shipping label from amazon and drop it off at UPS (our choice, they could have picked it up).
