Coleman 4D XPS Personal-Size LED Lantern

I ordered two of these lanterns for use during power outages. I opened the first one, inserted batteries and turned the unit on. It is bright and is best suited for placing higher up and letting the light diffuse downward. The one thing I noticed was that the switch seemed cheap and poorly made. In particular after rotating on and off a few times the light would flicker as I had to find the sweet spot for each of the settings on the lantern. At first, I thought it could have been a defective unit, however I took the second one out of the box and it did the exact same thing. This is not something I considered worthy of returning the items for. It worked in each of the settings, but just took a little wiggling of the switch to get it right and is something worth noting for potential buyers.

Amazon sends the non-XPS version of this LED lantern, meaning it is not compatible with the Coleman 6V rechargeable batter pack and is not as bright. There is a $10 MSRP difference between the two (non-XPS MSRP=24.99, XPS MSRP=34.99); essentially, Amazon is falsely advertising this as the upgraded model and charging customers ~$5 above the MSRP for what they are receiving.

After over 2 months of dealing with Amazon, I've given up on them getting this order right. I exchanged it the first time thinking it was an accidental mix-up. But the 2nd item I received was still the incorrect model. I called and spoke directly with an Amazon representative and explained that Amazon's inventory seemed to be in error. The representative told me they would straighten it out among the supplier (Coleman) and their warehouse (Amazon) and that I would be notified when this is resolved and they would ship out the correct item. Once this was supposedly done, I received my 3rd lantern only to find it was the same incorrect model. I called again and they told me to just return it for refund and seek out another vendor to purchase this product. I'm going to try Buy.com.

Having high esteem for amazon over the years, it was very disappointing to see that they could not fix this problem. For customers who do not read the details of this product, they will continue to receive a lesser product for the money they are charged by Amazon.

I had the same problem as gum on shoe did. I ordered this item, the XPS model but received the standard model that is not compatible with the XPS system. The XPS system comes with a plastic holder that encloses the 4 D batteries to be fitted into the bottom of the lamp or you can install the rechargeable battery instead which fills the cavity the same as the battery holder. Coleman products are among the top performers so I am sure this is a great lamp but I didn't want to go through all the headache the other buyer went through and just returned the lamp immediately. Now I am just waiting the fourteen days to get my money back from Amazon. Pain in the butt!!!!!

Well made and nice design. I think the clear plastic should be etched or diffused to prevent the sharp piercing LED light hitting your eye directly. I used it in a tent and everything was fine unless you looked in an area of 1ft around it; even on low. I'm going to put something around it to help diffuse the intense light source, but other than that it's great!

It is a convenient small size and very well made. It broadcasts its light very well, and I can assume batter life will be excellent. My only criticism is with the manner of reflecting the extremely bright LED light. The point at the top of the reflector is so bright that it will give you blind spots if you look at it for more than a second. We had originally purchased this as a gift for one of our grandchildren, but after testing it out we kept it for ourselves and purchased him one with flourescent tubes instead. I know, it sounds like the BB gun from "A Christmas Story" where they keep talking about "It'll put your eye out!" But seriously, be careful with this around young kids. It's that bright. It would work best hung from a high level in a room or tent so as to keep the offending point of light away from a direct line of sight.

Great light, compact, adjustable light intensity levels to obtain just the rite amount of light for every job. Extremely Long battery life. I have the rechargeable pack also but have not tried it out to see how many hours it lasts.

I am living in Japan around Tokyo. This time we had a huge earthquake and many people bought emergency light and as a result, now there is no stock in the store. I found this at Amazon site and purchased without reading reviews. I trusted a description of product feature, "Coleman XPS-compatible; can use the interchangeable 6V XPS rechargeable battery pack (sold separately)" so I bought a 6V XPS rechargeable battery pack too. (Now in Tokyo, it's hard to get 4D Cell too.) But the actual product I received was a PERSONAL SIZE LED LANTERN (MODEL# 4345-700) and it's not compatible with rechargeable battery pack.
Product itself works good as a lamp when we have blackout. So I did not return it.( We DO need a lamp when scheduled blackout happened !!.) But rechargeable battery pack is no more useless.

Very bright. I have used to for two camping and it works great.

3 levels to control the light is a plus. Very good for tent and enough to light you sitting area (group of 10+) or camping kitchen area.

Needs 4 D batteries. This model is less bulky and okay compared to one that needs 6D or 8D batteries.
