This absolutely INCREDIBLY informative book focuses on the volatile political climate of the MOST racially polarized urban region in the Western World!! Ingenious Coleman Andrew Young nevertheless made it his DESTINY to be the mayor of the"hub"of this region!!! Utilizing the VAST organizational skills he garnered while being a Labor-leader in the auto-industry,this hyper-intelligent gentleman began to methodically position himself to BE the type of leader who could move Detroit forward from the unenviable position of a searing racial cauldron to the cosmopolitan industrial power it was always destined to be!! INFINITELY more than merely the"racist"mayor that Anglo-Saxon south-east Michiganders swore him to be,this unique, shrewd, relentless and potent individual was actually a man to be ADMIRED for perservering through the onset of malevolent opposition which attempted to stymie his drive to arrive at the top, ever since he was a youth!! Learning about the"details"/particulars which were taking place simultaneous with his emergence as a political major-player in Detroit, has given me even a GREATER respect for a man,I'd already admired for his sheer TENACITY and intrepid, dauntless mind-set in perpetually engaging hostile"forces"arrayed against him!! After reading"Hardstuff",I thought I knew ALL there was TO know about this admirable gentleman, but this great book is essential in painting a complete picture in the"portrait"of the era of Mayor Coleman Young!! An absolute MUST-READ for the person interested in the inner workings of political happenings..All the current(and past)political figures who played a part in Coleman Youngs' emergence into the man who essentially EMBODIED Detroit,is sure to surprise!! An EXCELLENT,intriguing 10-star read!!
