About the Author
Sidonie Gabrielle Claudine Colette (1873-1954) was born in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye, France. Her early books were written in collaboration with her first husband, Henri Gauthier-Villars (pseudonym Willy); after their divorce in 1906 she appeared in music-halls in dance and mime, then settled as a writer. Her novels include the
Claudine series (1900--3),
Chri (1920), and
Gigi (1945). She won many awards for her work, and became a legendary figure in Paris.
