Brushing with Colgate Total® Helps Protect Against Common Oral Health Problems

Ordinary Non-Antibacterial Toothpaste

Ordinary Non-Antibacterial Toothpaste

Colgate Total® Toothpaste

Colgate Total® Toothpaste
Illustration of plaque bacteria 12 hours after brushing with Colgate Total® vs. ordinary, non-antibacterial toothpaste.
  1. Plaque is a sticky colorless film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. It's the main cause of cavities and gingivitis and can harden into tartar if not removed daily. Colgate Total® contains an antibacterial ingredient and has a unique formula that attaches to teeth to help reduce plaque.

  2. Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease which, if left untreated, may develop into periodontitis. People with gingivitis may have inflamed gum tissue or red, swollen gums that bleed easily. Colgate Total® reduces the plaque germs that cause gingivitis.

  3. Tartar, sometimes called calculus, is plaque that has hardened on teeth or at the gumline. Colgate Total® works to fight tartar build-up by preventing plaque from forming.

  4. Cavities are tooth decay, which is heavily influenced by eating habits, oral hygiene and the presence of fluoride in water and toothpaste. Colgate Total® provides fluoride protection against cavity formation and tooth decay.

  5. Bad Breath is breath with an unpleasant odor. One cause is the millions of bacteria that live in the mouth. The mouth's warm, moist conditions make it an ideal environment for bacteria to grow. Colgate Total® helps kill bacteria that live in the mouth and cause bad breath.

  6. Weak Enamel results when the outer layer of the tooth is worn away or eroded. Many common foods and drinks are acidic and can wear away enamel. The build-up of plaque bacteria and aging may also contribute. Colgate Total® Enamel Strength is formulated to strengthen tooth enamel.

  7. Stains on teeth can be caused by tobacco, coffee, red wine and certain foods. Colgate Total® effectively whitens teeth by gently removing surface stains.

The Connection Between Diabetes and Oral Health

People with diabetes are 2x more likely to develop serious gum disease. Why? Diabetes makes the body more susceptible to bacterial infection, so people with diabetes have a decreased ability to fight germs that invade the gums. If you have diabetes, there are easy steps you can take to help protect your oral health.

One simple step is to brush with a toothpaste specially formulated for gum health. Colgate Total® toothpaste is the only FDA-approved toothpaste to prevent gingivitis and is recommended most by dentists for gum care.**

*   Based on a clinical study, 12 hours after brushing vs. ordinary, non-antibacterial toothpaste

** Colgate Total® toothpaste is approved through the New Drug Application process to help prevent gingivitis.
Not approved for the prevention or treatment of serious gum disease or other diseases.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Colgate Total Advanced Whitening Toothpaste, which I have been using for several months, has indeed helped restored my teeth's natural whiteness. Although it doesn't whiten in the sense of recoloring the teeth, it eliminates yellow stains.

My periodontist had recommended Sensodyne, which I had previously used, but after several swigs a day of peridex (chlorhexidene), an antibacterial mouthwash I needed to use for ten days after each periodontal surgery, my teeth had yellowed considerably. So I tried Colgate Total Advanced Whitening, which is much easier to use than whitening strips. It also tastes fine, contains fluoride to help prevent cavities, resists tartar and plaque buildup, gives 12-hour protection, and has the ADA seal of approval.

Now, however, after researching on the Web, I am concerned about its component triclosan, which the FDA is currently investigating and which the Environmental Protection Agency has classified as a probable human carcinogen.

Some facts: Triclosan provides 12-hour protection because its polymer gantrez attaches to the teeth. Found in many antibacterial soaps, deodorants, and Colgate Total toothpaste (and some Sensodyne products as well), it reacts with chlorine in tap water to form toxic chloroform, which is linked to cancer, and believed also to disrupt endocrine function. Triclosan contains chemicals similar in structure to toxic PCBs, and is also used in antimicrobial pesticides, under the names of cloxifenolum and microbicide.

My own state representative, Edward Markey (Chairman of the Energy and Power Subcommittee, one of the most powerful subcommittees in the US House), has been urging both the FDA and EPA to ban its use in personal care products. I have great respect for Repr.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Colgate, like its competitors, fills store shelves with endless minor variations on its products. The Colgate Total line is unusual in that one of the ingredients is Triclosan, which kills bacteria that can cause gum disease. My dentist recommended the Colgate Total line because I have a continuing battle with gingivitis, and I have been using it for several years now. Unfortunately, I can no longer find my favorite variant in local stores, Colgate Total Advanced Fresh, though I could order it online.

As I said above, there are many variations on Colgate Total. They all have the same amount of flouride and Triclosan, but vary in abrasiveness (look for the position of silica in the ingredients), whether it is a paste or a gel, and some other properties that aren't immediately obvious from the label. The "Advanced Whitening Paste" is a paste that is higher in abrasiveness than others in the line - this is what makes it "whitening" in that it removes surface stains with the silica. There is not any kind of bleaching action here.

If you are like my wife, who has sensitive teeth, you'll want to avoid this particular style and look for one lower in abrasiveness, such as Colgate Sensitive Enamel Protect Toothpaste (not part of the "Total" line.) Also, the gel-style toothpastes tend to be somewhat less abrasive than the paste-styles. However, I don't have this problem and the Advanced Whitening Paste works well for me. It tastes good and leaves my teeth feeling clean and my mouth refreshed.

A final comment on the Triclosan - there are many who worry about the increasing preponderance of products containing antibacterial agents, as this can lead to development of drug-resistant bacteria. I have stopped using soap with Triclocarban, a relative of Triclosan, but I keep using the Colgate Total as I believe it is helping my gums.

I used to use the most expensive toothpaste on the market. Wife turned me on to this product and teeth were whiter in a week. Use this with the Sonicare toothbrushes and you will have a winning smile.

Normal. Essentially what you would expect from any toothpaste, which is that it keeps my mouth clean and free from cavities.
