Colgate Classica III Dual Firmness Foam Crib Mattress

The Colgate Classica III is a high quality, lightweight, 8.5 lb orthopedic-style dual firmness Infant / Toddler foam crib mattress. The extra supportive infant side is very firm as most medical experts recommend for infants. The less firm, more comfortable toddler side is still firm, but a little less so than the infant side. Square corners ensure a snug, safe fit in all standard American cribs and toddler beds.

The Colgate Classica III mattress is 5" thick and, at only 8.5 lbs, makes for easy sheet changing. The mattress cover is triple layered, reinforced, waterproof, tear-resistant, and non-allergenic. Plus, durability is assured with strong cloth binding and the mattress stays fresh with a double row of eyelet vents. Mattress cleanup is easy with a damp cloth and mild soap.

Colgate's Classica III features high-quality CertiPUR-US certified safe foam. This mattress passes all federal and state requirements for flammability and chemical composition and has been GREENGUARD certified to have no harmful air emissions. Colgate's mattresses are made in the USA.

GREENGUARD Certified

Colgate’s product line of crib mattresses have been awarded the GREENGUARD Children and Schools certification for indoor air quality. The Children and Schools certification, GREENGUARD’s strict standard designed for products used in daycare, K-12, and healthcare facilities, addresses the unique sensitivities of children and other sensitive population groups. This standard places additional limits on chemicals that are known to adversely affect child development. Colgate has been manufacturing foam and innerspring crib mattresses, foam pads, and crib mattress and pad accessories in Atlanta for over half a century.

Choosing a Crib Mattress

There are a lot of choices in the crib mattress category, so choosing the right one can be intimidating. Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind as you begin your search:

  • Don’t compare the attributes of your adult mattress to your child’s crib mattress. Firmer is better when it comes to babies.
  • Your baby’s soft bones and muscles need more support than an adult’s.
  • When choosing a foam mattress, the firmer and heavier the foam - and the faster it returns to its original flat shape when weight is removed - the better.
  • The innerspring design is the most classic. The more layers and the higher quality those layers are, the better the mattress.
  • Look for quality materials in the innerspring mattress comfort layers that won’t compress over time.
  • All materials that come in contact with your baby’s skin should be safe. Look for Greenguard and CertiPUR-US seals of approval.
The firmer the foam - and the faster the foam returns to its original flat shape when weight is removed - the better the mattress

FAQ

What is the difference between a foam mattress and an innerspring mattress?

Innerspring mattresses are a tried-and-true industry standard and a great option. One of the biggest advantages of foam mattresses is that they usually weigh between eight and 14 pounds, as compared to an innerspring mattress which can weigh 20+ pounds. This does make a difference when changing the sheets. In the end it comes down to personal preference, and there is no wrong decision.

Do all crib mattresses come in the same size? How should the mattress fit in the crib?

The size range for all standard crib mattresses is regulated by the Federal government. The minimum crib mattress size is is 27 1/4 inches x 51 5/8 inches, and not thicker than six inches. Cribs are also regulated, but their interior dimensions have a "plus or minus" tolerance from the standard 28 inch x 52 inch rectangle. Therefore, depending on the specific crib and mattress combination, the mattress may be either very snug or moderately snug in the crib. The Consumer Product Safety Commission sets the standards for crib and crib mattress sizes and how the combination should fit.

Why are crib mattresses so hard? Will it be uncomfortable for my baby?

For infants, the crib mattress is much more than just a sleeping surface; it’s their growth and developmental center. In fact, infants will spend up to 70% of their day on a crib mattress. They need a firm, flat, even surface to maximize their development. The firm surface is particularly important both during periods of sleep and when the infant begins to become more active in the crib. They need the firm surface as they begin to push up, turn, and eventually stand in the crib. A solid base provides the resistance necessary for developing and strengthening muscles. Firmer is better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Buy February 8, 2008
We found a the sister mattress to this one in a store. It had a blue cover and no vent holes...usually for hospitals. We happened to check on-line and found this one. I called the manufacturer and they said that the white covered one was the SAME mattress, but intended for residential (and a little cheaper, but only due to the cover). The cover gets washed almost daily in a hospital and has to be able to hold up to that.

Ok, why this one over other foams? We liked the density, weight, price and vent holes.

Density--It has a high density (very firm) side for newborns and a lower density (little more give...softer) for toddlers. SIDS is a BIG concern these days and a BIG thing we parents can do is put newborns on a FIRM mattress.

Weight--Changing sheets in a crib is necessary to remove the mattress to do so. This is very lightweight and easy to remove. The snug fit in the crib is very necessary so your little one doesn't get a leg/arm caught down beside the mattress.

Price--Compared to an interspring or other foam mattresses, Amazon had the best price on these mattresses. There are only a few select stores that sell them. Also, I called the manufacturer. It is a small Grandfather/father/son business. This is ALL they do and they do it well and VERY resonably priced. You can't get a mattress from them for an adult...they specialize in babys and kids.

Vent Holes--Since I mentioned it I'll expand a bit. Vent holes allow the mattress to breathe (like when they jump on it). Our daughter (almost 2) is starting to jump in the crib when she wakes up and sees us. It's cute and I'm really glad we have those vents.

We are VERY pleased with this mattress AND with Amazon's price for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Mattress for Baby February 17, 2010
My wife shopped around for weeks at retail stores trying to find the best mattress for our son that is set to arrive at the end of March. She reviewed all the websites and found that the Colgate mattress offers the best of all worlds having two different sides for firmness that are best for baby... along with having the highest ratings from all of the consumer and safety organazations.

We finally decided on the Colgate Classica III Dual-Zone due to the reviews and quality that Colgate is known for. We got the mattress and found that it is THE BEST. Quality is excellent and is made in the USA and customer service is second to none.

Fit and finish are superb. Excellent product, would highly recommend to anyone! Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality October 24, 2009
This mattress is lightweight, durable, and waterproof. My daughter sleeps 12 plus hours a night on this mattress, and after nearly 2 years of use it still looks brand new! I will be buying another one for my next child.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great mattress, but check the details November 19, 2009
We just received this mattress yesterday, and wanted to have it ready to go into the crib straight away. The firmness and the padding were exactly as described here, which was perfect. What wasn't perfect was the binding around the edges. On 2 sides, the binding was poorly sewn, causing the cloth to come apart, threads to come loose, and frayed edges.

We're exchanging this for another of the same mattress, which will hopefully be better. It IS a good mattress, but the company needs to pay attention to its quality control. This can't be an issue anymore for an American manufacturer of any product these days.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Great Mattress!!!-Colgate Classica III - Dual Zone December 28, 2008
I wanted to write a review of this terrific baby mattress. It has wonderful support due to its foam core. It also features separate levels of firmness depending on which side the baby is sleeping on. Our Mackenzie continues to get wonderful nights of sleep on this Mattress. Colgate added a cover that is both non-allergenic and waterproof. This prevents a lot clean-ups that were necessary on previous baby mattresses we have owned. I would like to thank Colgate for manufacturing a great product. I would definately recommend this mattress to anyone who is in the market for a new baby mattress. Thanks-Mike M

Pros:
No more sleepless nights

Cons:
They don't make adult mattresses!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Made in America March 12, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
It's nice and firm, it has two sides for baby or toddler, it's reasonably priced, it's well made, and best of all, it's made right here in the U.S. by a family company. Sure, I paid more than I might have if I'd purchased the Wal-**** special, but supporting an American "mom and pop" company is important. You cannot argue the quality. The mattress was made one month before I received it, as indicated on the tag. Our son is arriving in June, so we have not had the occasion to use the mattress yet, but I can't imagine I'd ever have a complaint. The mattress did not smell plasticky or have any kind of chemical odor whatsoever upon opening. Fits great in our Graco Sarah crib, very snug, no gaps. I am very pleased with it and grateful that companies like Colgate are still in existence.

Update 11-8-12

My son is now 4 months old and he seems to like this mattress. It is very firm, but he sleeps 9+ hours per night and takes excellent 1.5-2 hour naps during the day. He will only sleep for 30 minutes at a time at daycare, and I think it's because he's not comfy. Before moving to his crib at 3 months, he slept in our room in his Pack N' Play. He sleeps so much better on this!
