I am a toothpaste snob and have always bought the best such as Rembrandt, Mentadent, or Crest 3D because good toothpaste (including a Sonicare toothbrush) is so much better/cheaper than dental work.

The Optic White looks unimpressive as just a plain white paste. No stripes, twin tubes, sparkles, or any flavor-bursting crystals or strips. I was not expecting much, but after using it, I am so impressed with this that this will become my new toothpaste. It has a lot of silica in it, so it feels more abrasive than others, but it does the trick (along with some nominal amounts of hydrogen peroxide) to actually whiten my teeth as good or better than any other toothpaste I've used.

It also comes with a relatively high amount of fluoride at 0.76%. This is compared to the Crest 3D at 0.243% (or triple) while the Crest Pro Health lists 0.454%.

Additionally, I've found with a lot of toothpastes such as Crest Pro Health that they contain some kind of ingredient (one of the gingivitis or plaque chemicals) that tends to dissolve my mouth. With those other toothpastes, I get an annoying slough-off of a layer of mouth skin. I asked my dentist, and she said it is one of the chemicals and likely an irritant to my gums. Well, this Colgate Optic White does not have that ingredient yet cleans my teeth really well. I'm sure that Colgate has done their homework, but it is too early to tell if the additional silica will result in increased enamel wear.

Another note about Sparkling Mint is that it is really a bright mint flavor. Your mouth will feel really sparkling and cool which I kind of like, but some may find the flavor too strong.

I would highly recommend this toothpaste.

Almost all toothpastes promise 'whitening' nowadays. I've stuck with one inexpensive toothpaste brand for many years and have avoided switching (I'm often a skeptic about such things). I've also tried a few whitening products in the past - mostly strips - and have never been impressed. Although, I haven't been too faithful in that regime, either. Strips are kinda gross and it was easier to 'forget' than take the time to use them.

I am in my mid-30's and not a coffee, tea, or heavy soda drinker, but my teeth are not very white. When I had the opportunity to try Colgate's Optic White, I was ready. I have been exclusively using Optic White for just over a week, and I have noticed a slight difference in the brightness of my smile. Very slight, but a difference all the same.

Colgate suggests using for 4 weeks to see best results. As the taste and texture of the toothpaste is pleasant (with a small medicinal aftertaste from the hydrogen peroxide, I assume), I plan to continue my use and see if my teeth continue to improve.

I especially like the fact that I can kill two birds with one stone -- clean and whiten. I'm busy and don't always have time to floss, rinse, put on strips, etc, etc. But, I already brush my teeth several times a day - why not use a toothpaste that includes a whitening product? I can do that! So can you, can't you?

In my 1+ week experiment, Colgate Optic White fulfilled its claim: I *do* have whiter teeth in 1 week. I am anxious to see what the 4-week benchmark holds! I would absolutely recommend this to my friends or family if they were trying to whiten their teeth in a simple, non-invasive manner.

UPDATE: More than 4 weeks later (Nov 20, 2011).

I was using this product for months, and my teeth were white and perfect. As a heavy coffee drinker, this product was easy and worked - couldn't ask for more. After about 6 to 7 months of use, I had a dental exam and appointment. In this routine cleaning, everyone who saw my teeth complemented my smile, but warned that my gums were looking very unhealthy. Finally, the dentist asked if I was using white strips. "No, but I'm using Optic White." The response was clear, "You should stop using that immediately. If you want to whiten your teeth, stick with strips and only use them for a short duration." The toothpaste had not done permanent damage, but I was warned that continued use could lead to gum surgery. My gums were incredibly inflamed and flossing became a bear - bleeding and hard to do. I have since stopped using the product, and tend to stay away from "whitening" toothpastes.

My husband began using this product in July and I decided to try it. I noticed that it made my mouth tingle a lot and was not a pleasant experience. But, in the name of vanity I continued using it on and off for several weeks although the whitening effect was minimal. By September my mouth was very sore and my lips dry all the time. I looked at the ingredients of Colgate Optic White and was astounded by all the harsh ingredients. I couldn't believe I had been so foolish and vane, and threw the product in the trash. My mouth is still sore and I have to be very careful about ingesting acidic food and drinks. I would not recommend this product or any product containing such harsh chemicals!
