5.0 out of 5 stars Finally some answers!
With a five month old that seems to be in physical pain, crying real tears frequently, arching his back, feeding all of the time and gaining weight rapidly I know something isn't quite right. He's rarely happy, even after a feeding. Our doctor said he seems to be colicky, game me some literature and sent us home. I've since read Colic Solved and know something needs to...

3.0 out of 5 stars For the Bottle Fed Infant
While this is a wonderful book and has a lot of information in it, it also seems to be geared more towards a bottle fed infant. Giving advice mostly for formula fed babies, not so much for the breastfed ones. In the beginning I thought my baby had GERD, then we thought it was a milk protein allergy (both are mentioned in the book) only to find that it was actually...

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally some answers!, April 28, 2007
This review is from: Colic Solved: The Essential Guide to Infant Reflux and the Care of Your Crying, Difficult-to- Soothe Baby (Paperback)
With a five month old that seems to be in physical pain, crying real tears frequently, arching his back, feeding all of the time and gaining weight rapidly I know something isn't quite right. He's rarely happy, even after a feeding. Our doctor said he seems to be colicky, game me some literature and sent us home. I've since read Colic Solved and know something needs to be done. He has many of the symptoms of acid reflux, a gray-zone baby, and now I feel like I have the tools and knowledge to help my son feel better.

The book is very easy to read, and Dr. V puts all of the medical-ease into a layperson's terms. It's been invaluable as a resource in understanding what my son is going through right now. The book also has a chapter on things you can try at home while you're in the process of dealing with doctors and waiting for answers. These are very helpful and easy to implement.

I also have a 2 1/2 year old who does have acid reflux and dysphagia. The book has also given me great insight into what he went through as a "colicky" baby. He wasn't diagnosed with reflux or dysphagia until he was 15 months old - if only we'd had this book then we could have prevented some of his discomfort and probably some of his swallowing difficulties. Knowing what I know now from Colic Solved, I know without a doubt that something has to be done to get my 5 week old some comfort.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a fussy infant!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Answers Why Your Baby is Miserable !, March 13, 2011
This review is from: Colic Solved: The Essential Guide to Infant Reflux and the Care of Your Crying, Difficult-to- Soothe Baby (Paperback)
This book helps you explain to your pediatrician that your baby needs their help.

I have recommended this book to a dozen clients with hard to understand babies, and the baby's that are just so uncomfortable. They all agreed knowing and understanding what this author writes about - silent reflex and GERD is the essential missing information to recognizing cues, and behaviours your baby is having.

All my clients are exclusively breastfeeding, we looked at the breastfeeding management issues to insure it was not overly supply issues, or a fast let down or other mis-management breastfeeding problems.

Then when they tried eliminating dairy from their own diet and this does not do the trick, you really have to LOOK AT THE BABY and get the baby help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference, December 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Colic Solved: The Essential Guide to Infant Reflux and the Care of Your Crying, Difficult-to- Soothe Baby (Paperback)
As of today there have been 33 reviews of "Colic Solved" and 32 of them have been 5 stars (the other one is a 4-star review). That is an incredible percentage for a book on Amazon. The reason - "Colic Solved" is an invaluable reference for those of us with babies with Colic and/or Acid Reflux. While it is unable to "Solve" colic it does help give you strategies for coping and how to interact with your doctor.

One of the keys is to realize that "colic" is a generic term that really doesn't describe a treatable condition. It is a catch-all that is given to babies that cry... a lot. What "Colic Solved" does is it helps to break through the confusion and give you facts - such as what most people call colic is in fact "Acid Reflux" . This is a good thing - in a way - and while acid reflux can not be cured (only time can do that) there are things to do to help minimize your babies pain. That is key, if you have ever experienced a baby that cries uncontrollably you know that hope is invaluable.

Things covered

- Types of formula
- Sleeping positions
- Things to discuss with your doctor
- How to choose a doctor
- An explanation of acid reflux and how it makes your little one uncomfortable

Final Verdict- If your baby has been diagnosed with "colic" or acid reflux you need to buy this book. it won't eliminate the crying but it will give you several tools to help you cope through a difficult period.

If you have an infant who cries constantly and you are at your wits end, you need to get this book! This book saved my sanity! My daughter started crying non-stop when she was about 2 weeks old. The doctor diagnosed her with reflux and put her on zantac....however, the crying persisted. It was only after I read this book that I discovered what was truely wrong with her. In the book he describes the correlation between reflux and milk allergy in infants. Low and behold, our daughter is allergic to milk, soy, and eggs. If it wasn't for this book we would still be listening to her cry, believing it was just "colic." After reading "The Happiest Baby on the Block," I felt like such a failure....this book help me to realize that until you SOLVE the problem of painful reflux, or milk allergy, the 5 S's won't do a darn thing!!! PLEASE get this book if you are dealing with the same thing. Your infant deserves peace and so do you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just What I Needed!!, June 3, 2007
By
This review is from: Colic Solved: The Essential Guide to Infant Reflux and the Care of Your Crying, Difficult-to- Soothe Baby (Paperback)
After hours of searching for answers about "colic" and acid reflux I found relief for much of the anxiety I have been suffering in this book. As a parent I felt helpless and didn't know what to do about my daughter's reflux - she cries often during feeding and doesn't seem to be happy. I thought maybe it was just me and perhaps this was happening because I didn't shush her right or hold her properly. Dr. V busted many myths on "colic" and gave a well structured look at gastrointestinal problems that babies can encounter, which may be the reason for discomfort and an unhappy baby.

From diagnosis through treatment I found answers to anything from what questions I should be asking my pediatrician to what options might be available down the road if we need to see a gastroenterologist.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels that their baby has reflux or a handful of other GI problems. It brings both answers and comfort in knowing from a truly knowledgable source what kind of care the condition might require for a happy baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Daughter Solved, April 27, 2007
By
This review is from: Colic Solved: The Essential Guide to Infant Reflux and the Care of Your Crying, Difficult-to- Soothe Baby (Paperback)
One day after spending 4 straight nights walking my 7 week-old around my house while she screamed and tried to arch out of my arms... I, in desperation, went to a bookstore and sat in a chair and read this book cover to cover. It was like it was written by someone who lived with my daughter. I bought the book, took it home, and have since gone to her pediatrician and been able to advocate for my daughter with more knowledge and peace of mind.

Only parents who have watched their child in such pain understand the frustration of having no answers. I called my pediatricians office countless times telling them symptoms only to have them tell me that it was normal and that I shouldn't worry. Yet I knew that this wasn't normal. Every instinct I had told me something was terribly wrong. And there were times when my daughter would look at me while she cried so hard and I would have given everything I had to have been able to help her. This book was the first positive tool I found since my daughter began exhibiting symptoms of reflux and milk allergy... and it gave me hope that I could help my sweet little girl.

I highly recommend this book. I feel like we are finally working towards a solution, and it is a direct result of me picking up this book.

Parents should be encouraged to trust your instincts - if you believe something is wrong and that the "normal" answer isn't cutting it - this book will help you know what questions to ask and what solutions are available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Book on the Market for GERD!, February 25, 2011
This review is from: Colic Solved: The Essential Guide to Infant Reflux and the Care of Your Crying, Difficult-to- Soothe Baby (Paperback)
As a parent with two refluxers, I thought I had "read it all" in regards to acid reflux in infants, but purchased this book anyway - and I am so glad I did. It is packed with helpful information, even for the experienced and knowledgeable parent.

It's such an easy read and not bogged down in medical jargon, but is based on his experience as a pediatric gastroenterologist and father to two refluxers-one a "happy spitter." The combination of this in addition to his ability to simplify complex information makes for a unique perspective and effective presentation of the material.

My only issue is with the section on formulas. I wish he included more information and comparisons on the different ones used with refluxers. He is careful not to recommend any one formula and I think this is a miss on his part. Good Start, for example, with it's 100% Whey proteins is easier to digest because it is closer to the composition of breastmilk. Formulas like Nutramigen, Alimentum, etc. should be a last resort because they taste awful and are packed with sugars to counteract the bitter taste. The lack of information forces parents to go outside this book for answers and makes it the "almost"-authoritative guide on Infant Reflux. Hopefully, the author will include a larger section in future additions.

Still, if you are going to purchase one book, I highly recommend this one as your first read.

Infant reflux is not always related to colic so I think the title is terrible but the information is wonderful. I finally got some answers as to why my son was acting like he was in pain especially when he was eating. The book explains what is going on, it is easy to understand, and gives suggests to help. My son is now on Zantac and we now know what to do when his reflux is bothering him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth while read., June 4, 2011

This review is from: Colic Solved: The Essential Guide to Infant Reflux and the Care of Your Crying, Difficult-to- Soothe Baby (Paperback)
Worth the read. I have 3 children and it wasn't until number 3 that we were challenged with a child who had Reflux disease. I wish i'd read this whilst i was pregnant instead of reading it after we'd been through the hours of our daughter crying, not sleeping and clearly in a lot of discomfort. We were continuely told that her behaviour was 'normal' so we persevered but if i'd read this book prior i would have been much more efficient in getting her help where she needed it.

This review is from: Colic Solved: The Essential Guide to Infant Reflux and the Care of Your Crying, Difficult-to- Soothe Baby (Paperback)
I am not exactly sure what is the reason for Colic. I think it can be different things for different babies. But with my baby it is definitely Acid Reflux! After reading this book in a few hours, I felt like I had the knowledge I needed to talk to my doctor about what was going on. He prescribed him Prevacid after giving him my speech and I have a totally different baby now! This book is amazing and definitely made a difference in the life of my child.
