Book Description

December 23, 2008
When you imagine your wedding, what do you see?

Maybe you dream of exchanging vows before an intimate gathering of family and friends at sunset, followed by a chic and elegant dinner under the stars in balmy weather. You can practically see yourself at the altar, taste the cuisine, smell the gardenias, and feel the music playing when you join your guests to party at the reception.

But before your wedding comes together with all the romance and glamour you’ve imagined, you’ll need to make decisions about the details. Is your color scheme bold and rich or soft and ethereal? Will you be married in your mother’s garden at the end of a serpentine path or on an exotic beach with the ocean crashing in the background? Do you desire an elegant sit-down dinner or a fabulous cocktail party with a great DJ who keeps the party going late into the night?

With so many choices, it can be hard to decide where to begin. Now there’s no reason to get overwhelmed, because wedding designer extraordinaire Colin Cowie is by your side every step of the way. In Colin Cowie Wedding Chic, he shows how to weave a thread of style throughout your celebration, from determining the overall feeling and mood to the smallest and most personal details of the event.

Following inspirational introductions from Colin about every part of your celebration, each detail is captured with magnificent photographs: bouquets; ceremony décor; centerpieces; reception décor; food and drink; cakes; invitations, favors, and gifts; appearance for the bride, groom, and attendants; ritual and ceremony; and music and after-party.

Brimming with the kind of style that has made Colin the number one wedding planner in the world for celebrities, heads of state, and even royals, Wedding Chic finally gathers all of the options in one dazzling, easy-to-reference place. With photographs of more than 1,001 gorgeous details, it is simply the most comprehensive, varied, and beautiful resource a bride-to-be could ever wish for—one that is certain to make the wedding a celebration to remember forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for thinking about the details December 12, 2009
Format:Hardcover
I checked this book out from the library, suspecting that I would flip through many pages of photos, scout out some things I like and be done with it. I figured most of the information would be for weddings well beyond my budget.

I was wrong on both counts.

While it's true that Colin Cowie's weddings are spectacular, luxurious affairs that often exceed a minimal budget, this book isn't really about how to create your over-the-top wedding. Instead, it's a nice tutorial on choosing details that will both tie an event together visually and provide an exceptional experience for guests. There certainly are lavish ideas in here, such as installing French doors and a sunken dance floor in an outdoor tent, but there's also a wealth of information for those of us trying to keep the numbers low: little things, such as vary the centerpieces and table coverings so that the reception seems thought out instead of mass-produced. (Maybe some of you are saying, "Well, duh," but I didn't think of it.)

The book is divided into several sections, covering everything from attire to reception decor to food and beverage. Each section offers a few pages of Cowie's advice, followed by several photos, each of which is annotated with a description of what makes that particular element work. You're probably not going to find an answer to every design question here, but there are enough gorgeous photos (with commentary) to get your creative gears turning.

Granted, if you have experience planning events, much of this book might be old hat, but if you're just someone trying to throw a wedding that your guests will remember, don't overlook this book. It's a great start.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sadly Disappointing January 31, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
One of the great joys found perusing books such as this - is devouring the fabulous photographs. The lushness of the initial photographic impression draws the reader into the detail of the design - which then leads one to the descriptive text. It is this sequence that channels and transforms top-designer ideas into ones adapted to the reader's life. That process is a difficult challenge with this volume.

My criticism of this book has virtually nothing to do with the content; it's the presentation. The very size of the book is not consistent with most in this genre. It's small. That, in and of itself, could be fine if executed correctly. But most of the photographs are small - many of them not much larger than thumbnails on a page. This reader found it impossible to discern any detail in many of the smaller photographs. Even reading the accompanying text, then trying to find the detail it described in the picture, was often just not possible. Rather than inspiration, there was just frustration.

With so many books of this kind on the market, the reader doesn't have to settle for skimpy presentation. The publisher could have done better.
