As you'd expect from a top rally sim, everything about the vehicles can be customised, and tinkering under the hood between stages really produces a difference. If you're a bad driver you can also see the difference, as tearing the hood, side panels, or windows out midstage reveals an astonishing level of detail within the car. Engine parts move, suspension arms judder, and Mr. McRae himself bounces around the car's cockpit in full 3-D.
With a variety of gameplay modes ranging from single races to three-season tours of duty as McRae himself, there's plenty of bang for your buck here--and believe us, by the time you've cannoned off the scenery for the umpteenth time you'll know what bangs are all about. Thankfully, code masters have resisted the temptation to fill Colin McRae Rally 3 with discordant music tracks, relegating the score to intro and menu screens and leaving the in-game sound to codriver commentary and a multitude of engine sounds--a pleasant change in an age where licensed soundtracks are king. Perhaps the strongest element of this game, though, is the gameplay. The car handling is dead on, and in wild weather (snow, rain, and fog) guiding a speeding Ford Focus around sharp bends is a real art form. --Chris Russell

Challenging Ride,
By Wild Kat "sunblazer" (Miami Beach, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Colin McRae Rally 3 (Video Game)
The only other game you could compare this with is Microsoft's RalliSport Challenge. RalliSport Challenge graphics are brighter and the feel of the joystick is better, but you do not get penalized for flooring it throughtout the race. Finesse is rewarded in Infogrames Colin McRae Rally 3 after playing both, Colin McRae Rally 3 is more realistic. The damage on the car does affect your performance, the dust and the rain does affect your vision, and the tracks are more competitive. If your lookng for realism choose Colin McRae Rally 3, if you just want fun with your young ones, choose Microsoft RalliSport Challenge.

Amazing Realism,

This review is from: Colin McRae Rally 3 (Video Game)
I picked up this game used for fairly cheap, and when I finally played it I was amazed. This is by far the most realistic driving game I have played, and I have played nearly all of them for all consoles. The first time I saw the back window break into pieces my jaw dropped. A lot of work went into this game, physics and damage especailly. The graphics are amazing, despite what one of the other reviewers said. I have played Rallisport Challenge and didn't like it nearly as much. I started playing racing games with "Pole Position," videogames have come a long, long way since then.

The best rally game for any console,
By Anthony P. (Mohegan Lake, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Colin McRae Rally 3 (Video Game)
This is by far the best rally game I have ever played. The car's controls and handling physics are near perfection. The car feels great as you race through the various rallies and power slide through turns like a professional. The crash simulation is also incredible. If you go wide on a turn and hit trees, parts of your car will fly off and the performance of the car is accurately diminished as the car takes more damage. Another great aspect of this game is the changes you can make to the car. You can change almost every part of the car that affects performance from the entire suspension, to the turbo, to the tires and you can really feel the difference in the car when the race begins. You can also vary the difficulty so newbies won't get frustrated and veterans still have a challenge. All in all, this is a very fun game but there are some flaws. One main problem is that you can only race as Colin McRae for the first three seasons of championship mode. This is a minor flaw and didn't bother me at all but some people may not like it. Another problem is that each season is the same in championship mode (you run the same rallies, in the same order.) However, this isn't that big of a problem because there are six different rallies and each rally has seven stages so there is plenty of track variance. In the end, this is a great game if you enjoy the World Rally Championship racing series or like those dirt tracks in Gran Turismo 3 for the PS2.
