5.0 out of 5 stars Motivating December 24, 2008

I have most every collage book out and this by far is one of the very best to come along. Jane organizes her information in a very usable way. Her own art work and that of a few others is fresh and what a nice thing to not see the same old. After feeling stuck in my own collage and visual journaling this book was a welcome motivating force. I teach mixed media book making and collage courses and will use this book as a text from now on.

4.0 out of 5 stars It delivers what it promises March 4, 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is what the subtitle says it is; a practical guide. It reminds me of the visual equivalent of a filling beef stew. There's not much flair to be found in this book, but the artwork and concepts are solid. There are some good introductory level techniques presented in this book. It's not my favorite book on the topic, but it was a good addition to my collection and I'd recommend it to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! September 7, 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is very different from Jane Davies' other book on collage. In COLLAGE WITH COLOR, she presented her whimsical and child like side. In COLLAGE JOURNEYS, she presents a more artistic and Avant-garde side. I guess it would be like Eric Carle vs. Pablo Picasso. As a BFA and graphic artist, I appreciate and love them both! In this current book, she challenges the reader to reach into his inner-self and create from the heart. There are no 1+1=2 projects, they are all explorations. It is a marvelous book to inspire you, challenge you, and help you continue to develop your style as an artist. Although it may be intimidating to the novice artist, I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite collage book April 10, 2009
Format:Paperback
Jane's book shows how to collage and paint beautiful backgrounds. She shows how to use tissue paper in collage and how to collage JUST with tissue paper. Missing from this book is the usual reliance on prepared ephemera prevalent in so many mixed media books and magazines. Jane shows lovely techniques to make painted and collaged backgrounds. She suggests making large "paint playgrounds" and dissecting them to find backgrounds. She describes manipulating a collage by digitally enlarging a small section of a completed collage to find a whole new piece.

One thing that I wish there was in more books was present here. A variation on a ideas, here with a paper collage trio she shows examples of collaging the same shape (a palm tree)with three very different types of papers. Each is lovely in its own way and this is something that has influenced my thinking as I choose papers for collage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing and inspring January 13, 2009
Format:Paperback
I found this book while looking at another one here on Amazon and it sounded right up my alley. I received this book today and I am thrilled to bits with it. Truly refreshing-very different than the other books put out today. I found this very inspiring and recommend it to seasoned collage artists as well as beginners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Collage Jouirneys: highly recommend March 19, 2009

I have found this book to be both informative and inspiring. It is not too often I buy an artmaking book and find myself furiously doing the projects or exercises before the week is out. I would consider myself a beginner at collage and have found this book to be a great way to begin exploring the medium. I particluarly liked the laminating tissue idea and have had lots of fun with that. I highly recommend this book.

What an excellent book this is on the process of making collage and using art as a tool to express yourself! Author Jane Davies helps you think about what type of art you want to create, what you can put in your work to get your message through, how to develop your own style and make meaningful art.

The book explores various techniques and methods to achieve different artistic effects, convey meaning, seek and find solutions to aesthetic and conceptual issues. Doodling, making several collages on the same subject and putting thoughts in writing/noting down an ideas list are just a few of the projects in the book aimed at helping you create more personal art, get past an artistic rut or get ideas for collages.

The book is also filled with gorgeous works, from Davies and a number of contributors, created in a variety of styles and using different techniques. Although there are no tutorials for them, there are plenty of ideas to absorb.

This is not really a step-by-step instruction book although it includes several projects and discusses artistic techniques to create mixed media art. Among them: layering, using text, making your own backgrounds and materials, exploring colors and composition, making tissue paper and cut paper collages, using digital software to created altered images for collage.

The instructions are clear and the exercises and techniques covered are enough to get a beginner started on making collage and art in general. But in my opinion, this is a more advanced art book because it goes beyond the basics of introducing tools, materials and techniques. com/Collage-Journeys-Practical-Creating-Personal/dp/0823099512">Collage Journeys: A Practical Guide to Creating Personal Artwork makes you pause and think about what you want to achieve through your art, which direction/s you would like to take, and equips you with tools to help you on your journeys of discovery.

Truly inspirational.
