An essential component to a firefighter's library,

This review is from: Collapse of Burning Buildings: A Guide to Fireground Safety (Firefighter Survival Training Series) (Hardcover)
This book is very well written, providing the reader a clear overview of the collapse hazards presented by a burning building. The organization of the chapters makes the book a valuable resource for a fire service instructor - complete with a "lessons learned" section at the end of the chapters. The only downside to the book is that it is written primarily from the urban perspective - but then, that's where Vincent Dunn got his experience. I'm hoping for a new edition; one that focuses more attention on the dangers of lightweight wood construction, and considers the challenges of the rural fire service. In the meantime, though, the current edition provides a thorough foundation in building collapse (based on building construction) for a fire fighter or fire officer.

Very well written. Alot of good war stories from back in the day. I would recommend this book for someone with 2 years to 20 years of expierence. This book gets straight to the point.

This is a great book that all firefighters & building contractors should have, it opens your eyes to the hazards of all building construction types.

Though dealing with mostly commercial building collapse, the principles are still visible in his writing. This book was a great eye opener to the possibilities inherent in various construction styles and techniques and their relationship to collapse under fire. I have gained great confidence in my abilities through the reading of this book and every firefighter should read this book. One thing disappoints me and that is that this book was written so long ago (1988).

Great, straight forward read. Very comprhensible, and the scenerios in the beginning of each chapter are great at pulling the reader into the situation at hand.

This is a very good book for anyone in the fire service. Dunn does an excellent job of putting his life experiences into words. The stories that open every chapter are situations that most firemen can relate to. The only negative I can think of is that there is some repeat information throughout the book.
