Johnny Hodges Collates, March 1, 2003
This review is from: Collates V.1 (Audio CD)
The original album, from which this CD has been re-mastered, changed my life. It is superb!!! All the tracks are special but my particular favourites are 'Who's excited', 'Sideways' and 'Sweeping the blues away', which all feature superb alto from 'rabbit' and the wonderful Lawrence Brown on trombone. All tracks on the CD were recorded on Jan 15 and March 3, 1951 in New York City. Hodges influenced all alto players including Charlie Parker with whom he recorded. If you only buy one CD this year it should be this one. Please do so and make me and yourselves very happy. The original album was never officially released due, I believe, to the usual copyright problems. However I understand 6 demonstration 10 inch albums were made by Mercury(MGC 111) on the Blue Star- Norman Granz Jazz label(6930A&B). I was lucky enough to find one of these in Paris in 1959 when I was 18. I still play it 43 years later! These tracks were the earliest recordings made by Hodges during the period 1951-1955 when he left Duke Ellington to lead this wonderful band. There , were also recordings made during the later period, of which I can give more details by email to anyone who is interested.

Johnny Hodges ORIGINAL Recording., February 28, 2003
This review is from: Collates V.1 (Audio CD)
This album changed my life. It is superb!! In particular my favourite tracks are 'Who's excited', 'Sideways' and 'Sweeping the blues away',which all feature Hodges and Lawrence Brown at their very best. They were recorded on Jan 15 and March 3,1951, after Hodges left Duke Ellington to lead his own band, which he did until he returned to Ellington in 1955. I bought an original demonstration copy in the Latin quarter in Paris in 1959. When I returned to London it did not come off the turntable for months. Johnny Hodges has everything and it is all here on this CD. He can swing with the best, his mastery of the alto saxophone on ballads is second to none. He influenced and played with Charlie Parker amongst many others. If you do not buy another CD this year, buy this one now!! Apparently there were 6 demonstration copies of the original,on BLUE STAR Norman Granz Jazz no.6930A and B, of which I have one. The British jazz musician and band leader Chris Barber has everything Johnny Hodges ever produced, except this. In addition to Hodges on this CD there is a fantastic line-up, including Lawrence Brown and Billy Strayhorn. It is not fair to have this all to myself, so buy it and make me and particularly yourselves very happy.
