5.0 out of 5 stars For me, a discovery July 22, 2012

I'll fess up. I never heard of Algernon Blackwood before stumbling on this collection. My loss. He writes well and is entertaining, creative, and fun. There's no challenge here, but if you want some entertainment, check him out.

In terms of his writing well, I find that too many authors who write in the horror/fantasy genre are dreadful -- often writing sentences that make me cringe not for their content but for their awkward structure or trite expressions or yawning predictability. Blackwood, by contrast, provides a cringe-free experience of reading. Every genre deserves, at the least, good craftsmanship. Blackwood provides that and a fine imagination as well.

Good descriptions. It had unique plot twists that I had not come across before. I haven't finished the entire series of novels and short stories.

Many moons ago, as a little girl, I read Algernon Blackwood's short story "The Wendigo". As I said, this was many moons ago - - and yet it stayed with me as the scariest story I have ever read. Never forgotten!!! Blackwood's work has a haunting quality that makes it the best hide- under-the-covers-and-enjoy-being-scared book of short stories you will ever read. To the youngest of you, this book is older than your great grand-ma but it is worth your attention and to the oldest of you, if you ever read Blackwood, read him again. He never grows old.

outstanding. an author who should be read by more people. His command of English and his ability to broad stroke a picture with words is surely second to none!

5.0 out of 5 stars John Silence-a fine read May 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The adventures of Dr. John Silence are always a fine ride! Black wood knew of the occult studies of his day and incorporated them into this "psychic detective."
