The Collected Essays of Robert Creeley [Hardcover]

Robert Creeley (Author)

Available from these sellers.

Book Description

June 13, 1989
For nearly four decades, Robert Creeley has been a popular and often controversial force in American poetry and letters. His essays, written from the 1950s to the 1980s and collected here for the first time, show a poet deeply touched by and in touch with the concerns of his post-war generation. His spare prose illuminates many important literary and artistic figures--Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Louis Zukofsky, Charles Olson, Robert Duncan, Allen Ginsberg, Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock, Frank Stella, Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston, John Chamberlain, and others--capturing the essence of their distinctively American achievements.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Creeley's essays may be read as a primer on post-modernist poetry in the United States. Certainly, he is considered important not only as a poet in his own right but also as an influence on his contemporaries and on those who followed. Thus, the essays, many of which were reviews or introductions to other books, trace a line leading from the Black Mountain School to the contemporary LANGUAGE poets. Creeley's taste tends to the theoretical, abstract, and cerebral. His favorites include Williams, Pound, Zukofsky, Bunting, and above all Olson, and though he appre-ciates some of the Beats, he largely eschews poetry that is informed by powerful and lyrical emotions. One also notes the absence of contemporary surrealist poets and ethnic Americans. Dense, compact, and sometimes elliptical in style but with something to say.
- Ivan Arguelles, Univ. of California at Berkeley Lib.

From the Inside Flap

"He is a master, one of the handful at work in America in any art."--Robert Hass

"Creeley's expository prose, like his poetry, is exploratory, elliptical, condensed and compacted, reflecting as much his critical intelligence as the movements of his mind."--Michael Davidson
