Creeley's essays may be read as a primer on post-modernist poetry in the United States. Certainly, he is considered important not only as a poet in his own right but also as an influence on his contemporaries and on those who followed. Thus, the essays, many of which were reviews or introductions to other books, trace a line leading from the Black Mountain School to the contemporary LANGUAGE poets. Creeley's taste tends to the theoretical, abstract, and cerebral. His favorites include Williams, Pound, Zukofsky, Bunting, and above all Olson, and though he appre-ciates some of the Beats, he largely eschews poetry that is informed by powerful and lyrical emotions. One also notes the absence of contemporary surrealist poets and ethnic Americans. Dense, compact, and sometimes elliptical in style but with something to say.
