Book Description

January 31, 1994
Dozens of sea stories from the most outrageous marine journalist in the Caribbean "I've always been astounded at the number of requests I get for reprints. 'Send me a copy of that story where you puke on the nuns...' or 'remember the story where you smashed a Baltic 51 into the reef off Antigua?' or 'do you have a copy of the one where the West Indian fisherman screws the charter cook on the foredeck?' Yes, indeed, I do. Somehow, in the sweet innocence of my youth, I always thought that being a professional writer would be, well, sort of refined and dignified. The savage reality, at least for me, has been anything but.

The Collected Fat. What an awful title, eh? People thought it was some sort of disgusting diet book. Even my mother was reluctant to read it. But it has some great early stories of Caribbean sailing madness--written with a more confident hand than Seadogs, Clowns & Gypsies.

These stories are among the best I've ever written. Imagine how that makes me feel.

About the Author

Cap'n Fatty Goodlander has lived over 50 years (of 58) aboard various sailing craft--forty of them with his wife Carolyn. Their daughter Roma Orion was a third generation live-aboard before she escaped to Brandeis University. (Their dirty little secret: Roma has become {gasp!} a dirt-dweller.)

He's written numerous books, six of which are currently in print. For 17 years, he produced a WVWI radio show aboard his vessel as he sailed the world. In 2008, he had a series of Sunday summer sailing spots on National Public Radio (NPR).

He currently lives aboard his 38 foot cutter-rigged Wild Card in the Mediterranean Sea and is about to complete his second circumnavigation.

He is also currently an editor-at-large for Cruising World magazine. In addition, he's written a Caribbean marine column for 30+ years--which presently appears in All At Sea.

Next up: a novel, a Caribbean refit, and a third circumnavigation.

His motto: "Kiss life full on the lips. Live while you're alive!"

"He refuses to grow up," confirms his wife Carolyn. "I'm always hoping he'll eventually show some small signs of maturing--but I'm beginning to think I hope in vain." She paused in exasperation, blew a wayward strand of her dark Italian hair upwards in frustration, and wearily said, "The reason we don't have much money is because they pay my husband what he's worth!"

Captain Fatty Goodlander is currently editor-at-large for Cruising World magazine. He is also the author of numerous books including:

Seadogs, Clowns, and Gypsies
Cruising World Yarns
All at Sea Yarns
Chasing The Horizon.

I received this as a gift, and was not sure I would enjoy it, boy was I wrong. From page one Fatty drew me into his world and life of adventure and humor wrapped in warm saline solution. Finished this great read in the first weekend. You won't regret buying this book!!!

The Collected Fat (Cap'n Fatty)

This collection of humorous columns is a delight to read. Don't read it in your shared berth, because you will rock the boat with laughter. The book works particularly well on the Kindle, because the words (not pictures) are the point and because short columns are great for that spare minute reading (which is why I bought the Kindle). After finishing this book, I went back to Amazon and downloaded a couple more by the Cap'n.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early Fatty, December 21, 2011

Interesting and sometimes funny but also a little rough. A really good example of how writers mature over the years and improve their style and structure. Fatty's latest writings are more fluid and the humor more subtle and I find his recent writings far more enjoyable. Not that this book is bad, it is still a good read and quite enjoyable if you are a cruising sailor it provides lots of home truths about life on a boat. It is just that Fatty has moved on and become a much better writer, he has certainly improved with age.
