Book Description

This collection, available exclusively in e-book form, brings together the twelve novels (and one novella) of the great Portuguese writer José Saramago, with an introductory essay by Ursula Le Guin. From Saramago's early work, like the enchanting Baltasar & Blimunda and the controversial Gospel According to Jesus Christ, through his masterpiece Blindness and its sequel Seeing, to his later fables of politics, chance, history, and love, like All the Names and Death with Interruptions, this volume showcases the range and depth of Saramago’s career, his inimitable narrative voice, and his vast reserves of invention, humor, and understanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible deal for an essential collection. July 26, 2011

I won't write reviews for the individual novels here, plenty has been written about them all.

As a new Kindle user looking for my first few books to purchase, I first searched for Jose Saramago to see what offerings were on the Kindle, not expecting to find a collection covering most all of his (translated) published works from Baltasar and Blimunda to The Elephant's Journey. With gems like Blindness, The Stone Raft, and The Cave (among others), this collection is essential for any Saramago fan, and at just over a dollar a book, should make it painfully easy for any newcomer to submerse themselves in some of the finest novels (and translations) that have been published.

Saramago's punctuation and formatting style is different, and lacking in traditional structure. But, your patience will be hugely rewarded with Saramago's profound commentary and reflections of love, life, and what it means to be human.

Seemingly endless paragraphs will be closed with simple, profound statements that could only come from a lifetime of critical and honest observation - sometimes heart-warming, sometimes questioning our strongest beliefs, and always poetic. If there was some sort of shortcut to the wisdom of our elders, these stories would be them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Errored filled pages May 1, 2012

This kindle version is filled with many errors--as if the books were typed up by a beginning student of typing. I enjoy the novels much less than I believe I would if these errors didn't require me to figure out over and over what an intended word is. I hope this is not indicative of kindle products from now on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sacrilegious Wit September 2, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
The Collected Works of Jose Saramago seethe with sacrilegiously scathing wit fashioned into a common-sense approach into everyday life as it was and is. A tremendously liberating, thought-provoking, enjoyable series of works.
